Al Pacino was spotted out in Los Angeles looking noticeably frail just days after the death of his longtime friend and “The Godfather” co-star Robert Duvall, and the emotional timing of the sighting has fans talking. Duvall died Sunday at the age of 95, with his wife Luciana confirming he passed away peacefully at home.

In a statement shared on Facebook, she said:

“Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time. Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort. To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything. His passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love for characters, a great meal, and holding court.

For each of his many roles, Bob gave everything to his characters and to the truth of the human spirit they represented. In doing so, he leaves something lasting and unforgettable to us all. Thank you for the years of support you showed Bob and for giving us this time and privacy to celebrate the memories he leaves behind.”

Back in 2003, Duvall spoke to PEOPLE about his decades-long career, which began with his film debut as Boo Radley in 1962’s "To Kill a Mockingbird." “It was terrific to be given that part,” he said. “I think I did okay.”

He went on to star in major projects including "True Grit" and "MASH*," but it was "The Godfather" that became his breakthrough role. Director Francis Ford Coppola praised him at the time, saying, “Actors click into character at different times, the first week, third week. Bobby's hot after one or two takes. That's all he needs.”

Despite his legendary performance as Tom Hagen, Duvall once joked about having one regret from the film. “I just wish I had a better hairpiece," he said, laughing. Still, he recalled the experience fondly, saying, “We all knew it, this was going to hit big. Those were good times.”

The iconic film also starred Al Pacino, James Caan, John Cazale, and Marlon Brando, whom Duvall described as “our hero coming up, a king.”

In addition to Al Pacino, Adam Sandler, who appeared alongside Duvall in “Hustle,” also paid tribute to Duvall on Instagram. He wrote, “Such a great man to talk to and laugh with. Loved him so much. We all did. So many movies to choose from that were legendary. Watch them when you can. Sending his wife Luciana and all his family and friends our condolences.”

Meanwhile, Robert De Niro wrote, “God bless Bobby. I hope I can live till I’m 95. May he rest in peace.”

As Hollywood continues mourning the loss of one of its greatest actors, Pacino’s emotional tribute serves as a reminder of the powerful bond shared by the stars who helped create one of cinema’s most enduring masterpieces.
