Aubrey Plaza’s pregnancy reveal comes after an incredibly emotional period in her personal life following the death of her estranged husband, Jeff Baena, in January 2025.

Baena’s death came several months after the pair had quietly separated in September 2024 after three years of marriage.

According to reports, Plaza remained in contact with Baena in the days leading up to his death and told authorities she received a text message from him just three hours before he was found dead at his Los Angeles home on January 3. Investigators also stated the two had spoken by phone the night before his passing.

Reports further indicated Plaza had grown concerned about Baena in the weeks after their separation, after he allegedly made troubling remarks, prompting her to ask a friend to perform a welfare check on him. Following that incident, Baena reportedly began attending therapy.

His body was later discovered by his dog walker, who reportedly found him after arriving at the home and noticing loud music playing inside, which she described as unusual.

Plaza Previously Opened Up About Her Daily Grief Struggles

As Aubrey Plaza slowly returned to the public eye for work commitments, she also shared a rare glimpse into the grief she had been carrying behind the scenes. During an appearance on Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast, Plaza candidly reflected on how she had been coping emotionally following the loss in her personal life. “I think I’m okay, but you know, it’s like a daily struggle, obviously,” she admitted.

Plaza went on to compare her grief to the horror film “The Gorge,” describing it as something constantly looming in the background. “At all times there’s like a giant ocean of, just, awfulness that’s right there and I can see it,” she said. “And sometimes I just want to dive into it, and just like be in it. And then sometimes I just look at it.”

Even when she tries to distance herself from the pain, Plaza said the feeling never fully disappears. “But it’s always there,” she admitted.

Calling the project “a real artistic labor of love,” Plaza told the Los Angeles Times in 2021, “Without sharing too much from my personal life, I knew if I decided to do this movie, it was going to be really painful. I have worked over the years with a process of using the things that have happened in my real life, the struggles I’m going through…using it as a cathartic process.”
