Director Chloe Zhao is shedding light on the now canceled "Buffy" reboot after having directed the Hulu pilot episode. The Chloe Zhao Sheds Light On The Canceled ‘Buffy’ Reboot Amid Fan Backlash first appeared on The Blast
Sarah Michelle Gellar took to social media in March 2026 to reveal that Hulu had canceled the long-awaited “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot. Following this, fans of the series vented their anger at Hulu, with many citing shows the streamer had greenlit that failed to catch on, saying that “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale” would have been a success. Now, following the backlash, two-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloe Zhao, who directed the pilot episode of the “Buffy” reboot, is speaking out.
Chloe Zhao Hints At A Future For The ‘Buffy’ Universe

Hulu ordered the pilot for “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale” in early 2024. According to PAPER Magazine, the cast and crew wrapped production in September 2025. Sadly, as mentioned, the streaming giant decided not to greenlight the show after seeing the pilot.
More recently, Zhao attended the 2026 Oscars, where her film “Hamnet” was nominated for eight awards, including Best Director. While on the red carpet, she spoke to a Variety interviewer, who asked whether she was surprised that Hulu didn’t give the show a full-season order.
She said, “I was not surprised.” When asked why, she said, “Well, you know, I had an incredible, incredible time with Sarah. With the whole cast and crew doing this, and we first and foremost see ourselves as the guardians of the original show.”
Zhao went on, “Our priority, for us and Sarah, has always been to be truthful to the show, to be truthful to our fans. So, things happen for a reason, and we keep our hearts open, and we welcome the mystery.”
The interviewer then asked if they would try shopping “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale” to a different network. She responded before walking away, “Welcome the mystery.”
What Sarah Michelle Gellar Said About ‘Buffy’ Being Canceled

Gellar has posted about the “Buffy” reboot several times on social media since it was confirmed they were filming a pilot. This includes her sharing a photo of the cast’s first table read. Gellar announced Hulu’s decision not to move forward with it via a March 14 Instagram post.
She said in an Instagram video, “So, I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me. Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale.”
After that, she thanked Zhao, saying, “I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots, and thanks to Chloe, I was reminded how much I love her, and how much she means not only to me, but to all of you. And this doesn’t change any of that.”
Fans Are Mixed On The News

As with news of any reboot, there was some skepticism surrounding “Buffy The Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale.” However, in general, fans of the original series were excited, especially with Gellar returning and Zhao’s involvement.
Following the news of the unexpected cancellation and Zhao’s comments, one fan speculated, “Hulu wanted to change the show, and they didn’t want to. This is what Hulu does! We want Buffy! We waited! We want it back!”
Another person asked, “‘We’ and ‘ourselves’ ‘our fans’ Chloe was not part of the OG series, why does she feel such ownership?”
Someone else said, “I admire the aspiration, but I don’t see how this team can see themselves as ‘the guardians of the original show.’ They chose not to involve a SINGLE one of the original writers.”
Lastly, another “Buffy” fan said, “Well, I love the fact that they wanted to stay true to the original, so that really sucks. Justice for Buffy reboot!”
Sarah Michelle Gellar Said The Reboot Would Honor The Original

As mentioned, Gellar became one of the champions of the “Buffy” reboot, despite previously opposing the idea. She spoke to IGN in September 2025 about the pilot, saying that it would honor “the show’s original DNA.”
According to Gellar, “Fandoms like ‘Buffy’ still resonate today — because it’s not just about the show, but about the community that’s grown around it. For me, the heart of ‘Buffy’ was always about found family, that sense of belonging and being loved for who you are, and that’s more important now than ever.
She added, “That’s what makes this new chapter so meaningful: it’s not just revisiting the past but honoring the show’s original DNA. The fact that people still carry such love for the show after all these years is incredibly special.”
The ‘Buffy’ Alum Has A New Movie Coming Out

Neither Zhao nor Gellar was excited about Hulu’s decision not to move forward with the “Buffy” reboot. However, both ladies have much to be excited about in their respective careers. For Zhao, her movie, “Hamnet,” won one Oscar for Best Actress.
Regarding Gellar, she’s in a new movie, “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come,” which is set to hit theaters on March 20. Early reviews for the movie are solid, with an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. She also appeared in 2025’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”
