While Kevin Hart's nearly three-hour-long Netflix roast may have elicited laughs, George Floyd's family did not find it funny. The George Floyd’s Brother Wanted ‘Will Smith Energy’ In ‘Disrespectful’ Kevin Hart Roast first appeared on The Blast
While Kevin Hart‘s nearly three-hour-long Netflix roast may have elicited laughs and applause from the live audience, many at home were appalled by some of the jokes, especially those about George Floyd‘s family.
The displeased family aired their grievances against Tony Hinchcliffe for dragging the deceased’s name in a distasteful joke. George’s brother, Terrence Floyd, was particularly disappointed by Hart’s reaction.
George Floyd was murdered by a police officer in Minneapolis on May, 25, 2020. The officer, Derek Chauvin, knelt on George’s neck and back until he asphyxiated him, sparking a series of protests against police brutality.
George Floyd’s Brother Slams Kevin Hart For Not Stopping Tony Hinchcliffe’s Crude Joke

Terrence weighed in on Hart’s Netflix roast drama during a virtual appearance on “The Latest with Loren LoRosa.” The interview shared on YouTube on Wednesday, May 14, captured the displeased brother calling out the roast’s showrunners and Hart.
When asked how he heard about Hinchcliffe’s crude joke about his late brother, Terrence confirmed that he didn’t watch the roast live on Sunday but heard about Hinchcliffe’s comments afterward. He was stunned by Hart’s laid-back reaction to the offensive joke.
According to Terrence, Hart should have reacted as Will Smith did at the 2022 Academy Awards. The latter sparked mixed reactions when he walked onto the stage and slapped presenter Chris Rock for making a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head.
In Terrence’s words, Hart’s reaction “should have had, not the Will Smith action, but the Will Smith energy, where you stand up and do it.”
The ‘Jumanji’ Actor Attended The Deceased’s Funeral

Terrence continued poking at Hart’s conscience, recalling that the actor was among the celebrities who honored his late brother at his Minnesota funeral. Given how he stood by George, Terrence argued that Hart should have shut down Hinchcliffe by saying, “wait, wait, wait, wait, hold up, hold up. That one is too far.”
The upset Floyd sibling pointed out that he understood the meaning of a roast, but his late brother did not need to be dragged into Hart’s show. He also called Hinchcliffe “disrespectful” for frequently targeting George, referencing how the comedian mentioned his name at Tom Brady’s 2024 roast.
Besides Hinchcliffe, Terrence was equally unimpressed by host Shane Gillis joking about Hart being so short he would have to get lynched from a bonsai tree. “That’s not tasteful. Like, I wouldn’t even laugh at that. Because that’s like you bringing up our past,” Terrence stressed.
George Floyd’s Family Issued A Scathing Statement Following The Roast

Terrence also blamed Netflix for allowing Hinchcliffe’s crude jokes to fly not once but twice. He believed that if the comedian experienced financial pushback for his actions, he would think twice about disrespecting the Black community.
The displeased sibling wasn’t alone as Travis Cains, a spokesman for The Gianna and George Floyd Foundation, confirmed the family was equally appalled by Hinchcliffe’s comments. He told TMZ that Hart condoning the joke was “sad for the culture,” adding:
“Let’s try to be a little bit more positive — and not sit up there doing colon inspections by white comedians.”
Kevin Hart’s Conscience Dragged Into The Drama

George’s family and friends were reportedly disappointed in Hart and his reaction to Hinchcliffe’s joke. They wondered if he would have been as laid-back if the jokes were about “one of his friends” and not George.
The foundation added that George’s daughter, Gianna, was being bullied at school, implying the crude jokes about her father’s death weren’t helping her situation. As for Hinchcliffe’s obsession with telling George Floyd jokes, the family dubbed him a “racist comedian.”
As for what sparked the media outrage, Hinchcliffe, while roasting Hart, said: “The Black community is so proud of you… right now George Floyd is looking up at us all laughing so hard he can’t breathe.” His words referenced George’s final statement before his tragic demise, “I can’t breathe.”
How Fans Reacted To The Controversial George Floyd Joke
The Floyd family wasn’t the only one outraged by Hinchcliffe’s comments, as many on X slammed the comedian’s poor sense of humor. One fan declared that Hinchcliffe’s joke was anything but funny. “I don’t see how one can find humor in implying a man who was murdered by the police is in hell,” their comment read.
They also slammed the “I can’t breathe” reference as “Stupid and unnecessary, just like Hinchcliffe’s career.” Another X user agreed, finding fault with multiple people for their reactions to Hinchcliffe’s comments. The list included the Black people who laughed at the joke instead of booing.
The list continued with the host and Hinchcliffe for their distasteful performances. A third expressed disappointment in Hart’s reaction to Hinchcliffe’s joke, reminding him how George’s death had sparked a massive movement against police brutality. “Turning his final moments into a punchline on a major platform is not harmless entertainment,” the fan argued.
