Jamie Lee Curtis has long been associated with some of horror’s most iconic films, but her personal feelings about the genre may come as a surprise. In a recent panel interview, the veteran actress shared her perspective on the genre that defined her career, admitting that horror has never really been her preference when it comes to entertainment.

On March 14, Curtis was at SXSW in Texas, where she discussed her horror legacy and promoted upcoming projects. The 67-year-old actress then admitted that she wasn’t really a fan of the genre, saying, “I don’t really love it.”

Curtis has starred in several horror films throughout her decades-long career, but the genre that she became known for, especially in the ’80s, is not her cup of tea. “I’m not joking; I’m not into it. It doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate it. It’s just not my genre, not my thing,” she explained, per Entertainment Weekly.

The “Halloween” actress noted that she owes her life to the horror genre, but added, “I don’t have to pretend that I’m a genre girl and that I love it.”

The Actress’ Mother Was Also A Scream Queen

Horror is practically in Curtis’s blood. Her mother, Janet Leigh, played the role of Marion Crane in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 horror movie, “Psycho.” In one of cinema’s most iconic scenes, Crane is taking a shower when a figure appears and attacks her.

The screeching violin music score, combined with Crane’s screams, created a chilling moment cemented in film history.

In 2015, Curtis recreated the shower scene for the TV series “Scream Queens” and posted a photo on Instagram. “Honoring the Royal legend that is/was/will always be, Janet Leigh. Thought all fans of the genre would love it,” she captioned the photo.

Curtis’ breakout role was in “Halloween” (1978), where she played the role of Laurie Strode. In the first movie, Strode was a high school student who became the target of Michael Myers, a knife-wielding serial killer who concealed his identity with a white, expressionless mask.

Curtis reprised her role in “Halloween II” (1981), “Halloween H20: 20 Years Later” (1998), “Halloween Resurrection” (2002), “Halloween” (2018), “Halloween Kills” (2021), and “Halloween Ends (2022).

Apart from the “Halloween” franchise, Curtis also appeared in other horror projects, including “The Fog,” “Prom Night,” Terror Train,” Roadgames,” and “Virus.”

Before she came back to reprise her role as Laurie Strode in 2018, Curtis wasn’t aware that she had agreed to film a trilogy. At the SWSW panel, the actress revealed that she wouldn’t have said yes if she knew she had to film more than one “Halloween” movie.

Curtis agreed to come back for the 2018 movie to give her character a proper ending, but when she learned that there were going to be three movies, she approached producer Jason Blum with her own idea. “I said to Jason, ‘How about a little development deal?’ And I owed him two ‘Halloween’ movies, so what was he gonna say?” the actress shared.

Blum agreed to the proposal, allowing Curtis to funnel future projects through her own production company, Comet Pictures.

As for the “Halloween” franchise, Curtis wrote in a People essay that “Halloween Ends” was the final film for her character. “It’s now the end for Laurie and me,” the actress wrote, admitting that she was tearful as she wrote her final goodbye.

The Actress’s Love For Anime

While Curtis isn’t a fan of watching horror, she does enjoy watching anime, specifically “One Piece.” In an interview with ScreenRant, the actress admitted that she’s a “legit” fan of the show, which Netflix has adapted into a live-action series.

“I’m a legit fan, like a serious OG fan, with the American dubs back in the day,” she enthusiastically shared. “One Piece” first aired in 1999, and to date, the Japanese animated series has more than 1,100 episodes. “One Piece” season 2 debuted on Netflix in March, and Curtis rallied to play the role of Dr. Kureha.

However, the actress missed the opportunity due to prior work commitments and scheduling conflicts. The role went to Katey Sagal. “I’m so thrilled Katey did it, and it is fantastic. It is just the greatest adaptation of an anime and a manga into live-action,” Curtis gushed.
