What started as a tense moment on daytime TV quickly spiraled into online debate, prompting the comedian to issue a rare public apology.

As the backlash continues to linger, he’s opening up about regret, comedy, and why he believes some jokes shouldn’t come with an apology.

Howie Mandel Admits He Regrets Apologizing To Kelly Ripa

Howie Mandel is now questioning his decision to publicly apologize after his awkward exchange with Kelly Ripa.

Speaking on “Hot Mics with Billy Bush,” the comedian didn’t hold back about how he feels in hindsight.

“I don’t believe in apologizing but I said, as I said in that post, which I kind of regret making,” he admitted. When pressed further, Mandel explained his reasoning, noting, “Because I don’t think you should apologize for a joke.”

While he acknowledged that the moment didn’t land the way he intended, he still seemed unsure about what exactly triggered such a strong reaction.

“Obviously I told a joke that didn’t land well,” he said, before reflecting on the nature of comedy itself.

Mandel went on to explain how the situation spiraled online, admitting he tried to calm things down by agreeing with critics and issuing an apology.

Still, he now appears conflicted, suggesting that trying to fix the situation may have only added to the noise.

Even though Howie Mandel admits the joke missed the mark, he’s still trying to make sense of the backlash that followed.

The comedian pointed out that making at least one person laugh has always been the goal.

However, in this case, that wasn’t enough. He described reading reactions online and feeling overwhelmed by how quickly things escalated.

Despite attempting to take responsibility, he maintained that he didn’t fully understand who he had upset.

At the same time, Mandel made it clear that he never intended to offend anyone. “I don’t know. I’ve been reading articles on the Internet and I don’t know. And if somebody is offended, if somebody feels that I did wrong, then I apologize,” he noted.

The experience, however, has clearly stuck with him, leaving him caught between standing by his role as a comedian and acknowledging how the joke was received.

Unexpectedly, the situation has also made Mandel more aware of his own image.

He admitted that the attention surrounding the moment has shifted how he thinks about his appearance.

“It’s made me focus more… up until a couple of weeks ago, I don’t really focus on my looks. I focus on staying healthy and vibrant… I’m focusing more on my exterior, on how I’m project myself,” he said.

The comedian also shared his confusion about how long the situation has dragged on, adding, “I don’t know what’s going on and I don’t know when this will end. And I hope it ends soon because I didn’t mean to cause any disruption. I didn’t mean to embarrass anybody,” he explained.

Before expressing regret, Howie Mandel had taken to Instagram to address the situation directly.

In a video filmed on the beach, he explained that the moment on the show was intended as humor.

“I’ve been debating for 48 hours whether I should make this post or not, and I don’t know if I’m doing the right thing,” he said.

Despite his hesitation, he moved forward with the apology, even though it went against his usual stance.

“Philosophically, I don’t believe that somebody who’s a comedian needs to apologize for a joke. It is a joke, it is meant as a joke, and it’s not meant to offend,” he added.

He also pointed out that, throughout his decades-long career, this was something he had never done publicly.

Still, he chose to address Kelly Ripa directly, acknowledging her support over the years and the history they share.

The entire situation began during Mandel’s appearance on Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos’ talk show.

What started as a compliment quickly turned tense when the hosts praised how he looked at 70.

“It doesn’t make any sense,” Ripa said per the Daily Mail, before Mandel challenged the phrasing, “What do you mean it doesn’t make any sense? That I look great?”

As the hosts tried to clarify, Mandel pushed back, saying, “No. No. No, I don’t like that because that’s a caveat. When you tell someone you’re 70, and they say you look great…”

Ripa attempted to reassure him, explaining, “We’re not saying you look great for 70 [years old]. We’re saying you look great and I don’t believe you’re 70.”

However, Mandel continued, comparing the comment to a backhanded compliment: “No. No. It’s like saying you’re smart for a stupid person,” he said.

He eventually tried to lighten the mood by joking that he looked “gorgeous,” but the moment had already sparked online conversation, one that has now led to regret, reflection, and an apology he wishes he never made.
