A proud family celebration turned into an emotional milestone for Jennifer Lopez as she watched her son Max Muniz graduate from high school.

Surrounded by loved ones, the singer and actress smiled for photos and embraced the moment, but it was clear something deeper was weighing on her mind.

With both of her children preparing for major life changes, Lopez found herself struggling to hold back tears.

Jennifer Lopez Celebrates Max’s Big Achievement

Max Muniz marked a major chapter in his life when he graduated from high school during a ceremony held at UCLA.

The 18-year-old was surrounded by family members as he received his diploma, including his mother, twin sibling Oskar Muniz, grandparents Guadalupe and David Lopez, and Jennifer’s longtime manager Benny Medina.

Lopez appeared proud as she hugged her son and posed for photos following the ceremony. While she managed to maintain her composure during family snapshots, emotions soon began to show.

According to the Daily Mail, observers noted that the singer became visibly emotional throughout the event. At one point, she appeared especially moved while interacting with an instructor, gently placing a hand on the staff member as tears welled in her eyes.

For Lopez, the occasion represented more than a graduation. It marked another step toward a future where her children are beginning to create lives of their own.

Oskar Muniz Joins Family For Emotional Day

The graduation also drew attention because it was one of the first major public family appearances since reports emerged regarding Oskar Muniz’s new identity.

Oskar, formerly known publicly as Emme, attended the ceremony to support Max. According to reports, Oskar was recently listed under the new name on a university program and is identified using male pronouns.

The development follows a moment in 2022 when Lopez introduced Oskar onstage using “they” pronouns, signaling a nonbinary identity at the time.

Dressed in a red polo shirt and blue slacks, Oskar joined family members in celebrating the occasion. Max, meanwhile, wore a tie-dye shirt, Nike sneakers, and several leis as he enjoyed the festivities.

Although the graduation focused on Max’s achievement, the family’s evolving dynamics have continued to attract public attention as both twins prepare for life beyond high school.

Jennifer Lopez Admits She’s Been Crying For Months

The tears seen at Max’s graduation did not come out of nowhere.

Just days before the ceremony, Lopez opened up about her emotions during an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” where the conversation turned toward her children leaving home.

“Don’t talk about it, I’ll start crying,” Lopez said when the subject came up.

The singer revealed that the thought of her twins moving out has affected her deeply. She admitted she had been “crying for two months” while preparing for this transition and expected graduation season to be especially emotional.

When Kimmel asked whether it was difficult having her children attend separate schools, Lopez made it clear that their happiness remained her top priority.

“I mean, it’s fine,” she said. “I want them to be happy. Go where they want to go, do what they want to do.”

As college approaches, Lopez is already thinking about the practical side of helping her children move away from home.

She explained that she intends to personally assist with getting them settled into their dorms despite her busy schedule and public profile.

“We’re going to pack up their rooms here, and they’re going to take all the things that they want to take to their dorm,” said Lopez.

She then joked about what she expects will happen next.

“Then they’re going to realize that their dorms are too small,” she quipped. “They’re going to miss home. I hope they want to come back real soon.”

Lopez currently lives in an $18 million Hidden Hills property she purchased after the end of her marriage. While the sprawling estate offers plenty of room, she knows it will feel very different once her children leave.

Like many parents facing an empty nest, she is trying to embrace the next stage while hoping her children remain close.

The graduation arrived during a period of significant change for the family.

Lopez shares Max and Oskar with singer Marc Anthony, whom she was married to for a decade. While Anthony did not appear to attend either graduation ceremony, the family continues moving forward as the twins prepare for college and adulthood.

Reflecting on her own younger years, Lopez admitted she understands exactly why her children are eager to begin the next chapter.

“I remember being that age and thinking, I couldn’t wait to get out in the world and do my thing. I really wanted to get out,” she recalled.

Even so, the reality proved harder than she expected. Friends had warned her about how emotional the experience would be, but she initially brushed off their concerns.

“And then like two months ago I had to write the thing for the yearbook or whatever the heck thing they make you write,” Lopez told Kimmel. “When I tell you, the tears. Two days it took me to write those things.”

Those words may explain why Max’s graduation became such an emotional day. While it celebrated years of hard work and achievement, it also reminded Lopez that a new chapter is beginning, one filled with pride, change, and the bittersweet realization that her children are ready to spread their wings.
