Miley Cyrus is looking back at where it all began, and how her family played a crucial role in launching one of Disney Channel’s biggest success stories. As she prepares to revisit “Hannah Montana,” the singer and actress is opening up about her early days, the audition that nearly didn’t happen, and the deep family ties that helped shape her career.

Growing up in Tennessee, she began pursuing acting at a young age, with her mom, Tish, driving her across state lines for auditions. By age 12, she had only a handful of credits, including appearances alongside her father on “Doc,” a small role in “Big Fish,” and a commercial.

Despite her early ambitions, Cyrus’ path to “Hannah Montana” wasn’t immediate. She first auditioned for a supporting role before being asked to try out for the lead character, then named Chloe. However, Disney ultimately passed on her, believing she was too young and small for the part.

She returned to her everyday life, including cheerleading in her Nashville suburb, while the network moved forward with a different cast.

Everything changed when producers realized the show wasn’t working as planned and reached back out. Cyrus was invited to audition again, this time in person. She landed the role, and soon after, her father joined the cast as her on-screen dad.

Billy Ray’s involvement wasn’t just a casting decision; it became a defining part of the show’s authenticity. “But my dad is too nice,” Cyrus told Variety, recalling a moment during auditions when Billy Ray encouraged other actors instead of focusing on himself.

Looking back, she said the bond between them ultimately sealed the deal. “It was so obvious, after all the other dads, that you can’t fake the kind of connection that we have,” Miley told the outlet. “The inside jokes, the nicknames, the handshakes, singing the songs together. It was a TKO.”

Billy Ray Cyrus’ Presence Helped Protect Miley On Set

As conversations around child stardom continue to evolve, Cyrus believes her experience was shaped in a positive way thanks to her family’s presence. “My parents didn’t need me to be famous to survive or to be stable,” she explained. “That was never my job. Every penny I ever made went into my bank account because my parents were good.”

Her father’s constant presence on set also provided a sense of security. “My dad was on set every single day, so there was nothing that could happen that he wouldn’t know about,” Cyrus said. “There was never a time where I was going to be alone in that dressing room.”

Cyrus’ candid reflections come at a time when the “darker side” of child stardom is back under the spotlight.

In recent years, the industry has been forced to confront uncomfortable truths following a bombshell 2024 docuseries that detailed alleged abuse and toxic conditions tied to former Nickelodeon producer Dan Schneider and Brian Peck.

Among those who spoke out, Drake Bell offered one of the most harrowing accounts, describing the abuse he endured as “extensive” and “pretty brutal.” The former child star revealed that even after the situation was disclosed to his mother and law enforcement became involved, he was still required to return to set, a decision he said proved deeply “triggering.”

Miley Cyrus And Billy Ray Cyrus Reunite After Years Of Estrangement

While their bond was once unbreakable, Miley and Billy Ray later experienced a period of distance, particularly during their parents’ highly publicized split. The estrangement lasted for years, but the two have since reconnected, both personally and professionally.

In 2025, Cyrus extended an olive branch through music, writing a song for her father titled “Secrets,” inspired by his love of Fleetwood Mac. The gesture marked a turning point in their relationship.

Now, the pair are back together again in a meaningful way, reuniting for the “Hannah Montana” special, a full-circle moment that brings their story back to where it all began.

The “Hannah Montana” 20th Anniversary Special is set to premiere on March 24 on Disney+ and Hulu.
