Late-night television is preparing for a monumental shift as Stephen Colbert, one of its most prominent voices, nears his final broadcast. 

Despite the looming conclusion of his tenure, the long-time host is finding it difficult to distance himself from the community he has built over the last decade. 

CBS announced in July that the franchise would conclude after the current season, citing the move as a financial decision made amid challenging industry conditions.

During a recent appearance on “The Late Show,” media icon Oprah Winfrey took an unexpected turn by stepping behind the desk to interview Colbert.

As the series approaches its final episodes following its cancellation, Winfrey asked Colbert what he felt he most wanted to “release” or “let go of” as he stood at this professional threshold. 

As seen in a YouTube clip, Colbert, who has fronted the broadcast since 2015, admitted that he isn’t ready to relinquish any part of the experience yet. 

He told Winfrey that he still has a “white-knuckle grip” on the people he loves and has worked with for years, specifically shouting out his band, camera operators, and the lighting and sound crew.

The conversation also touched on the vital role of the studio audience, which Colbert described as the “third person” in his nightly interviews. He explained that while guests often have specific points they want to convey, the audience remains “very pure in their engagement” by simply listening and reacting to the moment.

While the transition away from his nightly crew is bittersweet, Colbert is already channeling his creative energy into a monumental new project. 

In a major career pivot, the 62-year-old is moving from the late-night desk to the writer’s room of a blockbuster fantasy film, co-writing a new installment of “The Lord of the Rings” franchise alongside his son, Peter McGee, per The Blast.

Teaming up with his son and long-time collaborator Philippa Boyens, Colbert is developing a film titled “Shadow of the Past.” 

The project began when Colbert identified sections of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Fellowship of the Ring” that never appeared in the original movies. He and Peter developed a concept that bridged the gap between the books and the existing films, eventually pitching the idea to director Peter Jackson.

Colbert Teased A Potential Podcast Future With His Wife

The creative partnership with Colbert’s son on the big screen follows initial hints that the host was looking for more intimate ways to stay connected with an audience. Shortly after the cancellation announcement, Colbert used a segment with “Saturday Night Live” star Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers to explore the world of podcasting. 

During the light-hearted interview, he jokingly asked the “Las Culturistas” hosts to sell him on the medium, admitting he would soon be in need of a new job, per The Blast. 

Rogers and Yang encouraged the late-night veteran to consider the transition, noting that listeners crave the genuine connection and “friendship in action” that podcasts provide. Yang even pitched a specific concept for the host: a show co-starring his wife, Evelyn “Evie” McGee Colbert, where the couple would go on dates and recap their experiences for listeners.

While Colbert focuses on his creative future and personal projects, the news of his departure from late-night television drew a sharp reaction from one of his most frequent comedic targets. 

Following the announcement that “The Late Show” would conclude its run in May 2026, Donald Trump took to his Truth Social platform to mock the host. The President, who has long been a subject of Colbert’s nightly monologues, expressed his delight at the cancellation, claiming that Colbert’s talent was even lower than his ratings.

The Blast reported that Trump did not hold back in his criticism, using the opportunity to attack other late-night figures, including Jimmy Kimmel.

Stephen Colbert Delivered An Emotional Emmy Speech

Months after being publicly goaded by Trump, Colbert walked away with an Emmy for Best Talk Series, beating out tough competition from “The Daily Show” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” 

The Blast reported that as he walked over to receive the award, the audience erupted into a thunderous standing ovation, chanting his name in a show of solidarity following the cancellation news. 

During his acceptance speech, Colbert remained gracious, thanking CBS for the “privilege to be part of the late-night tradition” and expressing his hope that the medium would continue to thrive long after his own show concluded in May 2026.

He also credited his crew and family for their support before closing with a stirring message that brought the crowd to its feet once more.
