A stage musical celebrating one of music’s most influential voices should have opened with applause. Instead, the first night of Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman: The Musical” became memorable for everything happening away from the stage. 

Audience members expecting a smooth premiere were left waiting nearly 40 minutes before the curtain finally rose, while another awkward celebrity moment unfolded during the interval. 

By the end of the evening, the backstage confusion had threatened to overshadow the very production designed to honor Khan’s remarkable career.

Chaka Khan’s Arrival Forces Audience To Wait

The show, scheduled to be a 7 p.m. curtain call at London’s Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre, didn’t begin until roughly 7:40 p.m. after organizers reportedly delayed the performance until Chaka Khan arrived and was seated. 

The singer, who had been held up while conducting interviews on the red carpet, eventually took her place before the show got underway.

The delay quickly became a source of frustration for theatergoers who had already been instructed to take their seats well before showtime. 

According to one attendee, the production team found themselves in an impossible position.

“Chaka was really late arriving for the show. She kept everyone waiting. It was a nightmare for the organisers. They couldn’t start the show without her, so they had to keep everyone waiting,” the attendee told the Daily Mail.

Audience Frustration Grew As The Delay Stretched On

The prolonged wait reportedly changed the mood inside the packed venue long before the first performance began. 

Guests who had settled into their seats by the requested time grew increasingly restless as no explanation came and the curtain remained down.

“The crowd got very restless. Everyone was told to be seated by 7 pm, so when the show didn’t start, people got annoyed,” the attendee explained, adding, “After a while, some people got fed up with waiting and went back out to go to the loo.”

The source added that the confusion affected more than just the audience, saying, “The whole event was chaotic. It was really insulting to the cast and crew.”

For performers preparing to debut a production based on Chaka Khan’s life, the evening’s biggest talking point had already become what happened before anyone stepped onto the stage.

VIP Exit Creates Another Awkward Moment During Chaka Khan Premiere

The production’s opening-night headaches didn’t end once the show finally started. During the interval, BBC presenter Naga Munchetty was seen leaving the theater with her husband, James Haggar, and reportedly did not return for the second half of the performance.

Munchetty had already attracted attention by skipping the red carpet despite publicity organizers hoping celebrity guests would pose for photographs before entering the venue. 

Video obtained by the Daily Mail showed the broadcaster smoking a cigarette before walking hand-in-hand with Haggar toward the Tube station.

Her departure reportedly caught the attention of organizers, particularly because invitations to the premiere had been limited.

“Naga’s early departure is likely to ruffle feathers among the publicity team,” a source said, further noting, “The venue was at capacity for the performance, and they were only able to offer VIP tickets to a select number of celebs.”

The buzz surrounding “I’m Every Woman: The Chaka Khan Musical” has also renewed interest in Chaka Khan’s recent creative projects.

In May, the Grammy winner returned with “Chakzilla,” her first single in seven years, using the release to introduce a larger-than-life alter ego inspired by Godzilla, but with a positive twist. 

Co-written with Sia and produced by Greg Kurstin, the song imagines “Chakzilla” as a force for good rather than destruction.

Speaking about the project, the 73-year-old told PEOPLE she wanted to flip the traditional Godzilla narrative on its head. “Instead of becoming a monster and just tearing up things, I became sort of a monster of a person who does good things,” she explained.

Khan added that the character was her way of trying to fix “everything I can that is cuckoo and crazy and awry,” saying she was “trying to fix and help a lot of people who are having a really hard time in this world today.” The single serves as the lead release from her upcoming album, “Chakzilla,” due in September.

During a March appearance on Jessie Ware’s “Table Manners” podcast, Khan said, “These women are doing any and every damn thing on stage and trying to sing, too.” 

She added, “The ones who are doing the most physicalities, with their butts and stuff, and their body parts, are the ones that usually are compensating for what they don’t have.” 

Khan stressed that her own approach had always been different, explaining, “[Have the] voice. Absolutely. I came to sing, and I came to really do a good job.”
