Speaking with Men’s Health, Domingo, who’s been in the spotlight lately after starring in the Michael Jackson biopic “Michael,” recalled coming out as gay to his family.
Domingo’s story is a bit uncommon, as the actor said he told his brother first after he took him to a strip club.
“I told him that I was gay. He looked at me and was just like, ‘What?’ He just couldn’t believe it,” Domingo said of his brother’s reaction.
A little while later, though, Domingo’s brother embraced him, saying he didn’t care about the actor’s sexuality. “And he just hugged me. Then he said, ‘Have you told anyone else?’ I said, no. He said, ‘Alright, this stays between you and me,'” he said.

Days later, Domingo said that he received a phone call from his sister, Averie, who was “p-ssed off” after learning the news.
However, she wasn’t upset with the actor because he was gay; she was furious because she wasn’t the first person to know.
“I said, ‘Look, yes, it was really hard for me to tell him.’ She said, ‘No, no, no. Why didn’t you tell me first?'” Domingo recalled. “She was p-ssed off because she didn’t get the information first.”

And the game of telephone didn’t stop there. According to Domingo, the next person in his family to learn the news was his mother, Edith.
Domingo said that she took the news well and vowed to keep the information private. But just 20 minutes later, Domingo said he received a phone call from his mother, informing him that she had spoken with his stepfather.
Much like the others in his family, Domingo’s stepfather reacted calmly, reassuring the actor that he was loved and cared for despite their different identities.
“She puts him on and he says, in his blue-collar masculine way, ‘You’re a good boy and there’s nothing you can tell me that would make me stop loving you,'” Domingo stated.
Although Domingo’s mother and stepfather passed away in 2006, the actor said their roles in his life have shaped him profoundly.
“Now I live without apology. What I feel is what I feel. What I say is what I say. How I love is how I love,” he said.
