For Billy Ray Cyrus, stepping onto the stage at a presidential event is more about his principles than politics.

The country star has not positioned himself on one side of the political divide, a stance that seems to be shaped by his upbringing.

In January 2025, when Donald Trump returned to office, Cyrus performed at the inaugural ball, a set that sparked mixed reactions and concern among both fans and his children.

In a recent interview, Cyrus opened up about his approach to politics, explaining why he has performed for presidents from both major parties. According to the “Some Gave All” hitmaker, the philosophy comes directly from his father.

“My dad was a Democrat and served in the Kentucky legislature for over 20 years. But my dad always said, ‘When the president asks you to do something, you do it, son,’” Cyrus told Sky News earlier on Tuesday.

Guided by that advice, he has performed for leaders across the political spectrum. “Served with Bill Clinton, with President [Barack] Obama, Mr. [George W] Bush, Mr. Bush’s dad [George H.W.Bush] and Mr. [Donald] Trump,” the 64-year-old said.

Cyrus acknowledged the weight of the role, describing the presidency as “a tough job,” and added that he continues to pray for the nation and its leadership and for the world in general.

Cyrus’s explanation comes a year after his headline gig at the Liberty Ball celebrating Trump’s inauguration, which became a talking point.

Technical difficulties plagued Cyrus’ set, and even his own behavior while on stage left fans raising concerns about him.

He opened with his 2019 smash collaboration with Lil Nas X, “Old Town Road,” but was forced to do the a cappella version after equipment failure. Through the gig, Cyrus appeared distracted by the large projectors behind him, which played the song’s music video.

At a point, Cyrus began repeating lyrics in a monotone, urging the audience to sing along as he wandered the stage.

He later tried to sing his 1992 breakout hit, “Achy Breaky Heart,” but ran into additional problems with both his guitar and microphone, forcing him to carry on without the instruments again.

After the show, the Grammy-winning artist reflected on the chaotic night with optimism that when challenges come, the way out is to keep going. He emphasized that the honor of being there to give a show outweighed the mishaps.

“I wouldn’t have missed the honor of playing this event, whether my microphone, guitar, and monitors worked or not,” Cyrus said in his statement, per The Blast. “I was there because President Donald J. Trump invited me.”

He added that in his career, he has learned that even when the instruments malfunction, he would still give his audience a good time.

While some viewers sympathized with the technical mishaps, others expressed concern about Cyrus’s stage presence, pointing to behavior they found unusual.

The Blast reported that on TikTok, comparisons even surfaced to Jackson Maine, the troubled musician portrayed by Bradley Cooper in “A Star Is Born.”

Those concerns appear to extend beyond fans. Billy’s son, Trace Cyrus, shared an emotional Instagram message revealing that he and his siblings are worried about their father’s well-being.

“It seems this world has beaten you down, and it’s become obvious to everyone but you,” he wrote in his post. “We are all hanging on to memories of the man we once knew and hoping for the day he returns. You’re not healthy, Dad, and everyone is noticing it.”

According to The Blast, insiders also noted that Miley, despite having a strained relationship with her father, found the performance troubling.

The popstar’s sister, Noah Cyrus, also joined in expressing deep concern for their dad. She emphasized her unconditional love for him and her desire to see him thrive.

Noah has never shied away from expressing her deep love for her father and the strong bond they share. However, like much of the Cyrus family, their relationship has faced its share of challenges, shaped by complex family dynamics and personal struggles.
