Recall that the rule was brought to light in May 2018 when “Dance Moms” alum Maddie Ziegler revealed she couldn’t go at the time because she wasn’t old enough.

There were suspicions that the rule was in place due to the “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” theme. 

However, the event organizers revealed that the rule was made because “it’s not an appropriate event for people under 18.”

Despite the age rule, an exception was made this year. At just 14, Blue Ivy became one of the youngest attendees, alongside Nicole Kidman’s 17-year-old daughter, Sunday Rose.

Blue Ivy’s appearance immediately sparked debate online, with critics questioning why the rule was bent and whether celebrity status played a role. 

“But so Blue Ivy is a minor too (14 years old isn’t 18) so she had no business being on the red carpet if we stick to the rules,” one person wrote on X.

Another commented, “My theory is that Beyonce wasn’t planning to return to the MET GALA, but Blue Ivy did want to go (you know, she’s obsessed with fashion). Beyoncé decided to attend, and even accept being a host, just so Blue could walk the red carpet.”

A third user shared, “@Beyonce @sc …blue ivy is too young to be dressed in those grown a-s adult clothes. come on now; that’s too much. @knowles_lawson @TinaKnowles … will let Monica know that her granddaughter is not dressed as a  child must.”

Despite the backlash, Blue Ivy’s debut also drew praise, with many applauding her confidence and poise on the red carpet. Many pointed out the uncanny resemblance between her and Beyoncé.

Besides being one of the youngest attendees, Blue Ivy also left people talking for other reasons. 

A video circulating on X captured the moment she refused to remove her glasses on the red carpet.

In the clip, Blue Ivy stood beside her mom, posing for photos, when two members of the media signaled for her to take off her glasses, as red-carpet etiquette typically involves removing sunglasses for photos, especially during close-up shots.

Rather than reacting to the calls, Blue Ivy stayed composed and continued posing on her own terms, occasionally shifting angles but not removing the glasses.

Not long after, Jay Z’s attention was called to his daughter’s actions, and he urged her to take off the glasses. 

However, Blue Ivy stayed put, insisting she would take them off when she got to the stairs.
