Long before he became known worldwide, DeCarlo was simply one of Boston’s biggest fans.

The band, formed in 1975 by guitarist and songwriter Tom Scholz, had already cemented its place in rock history with hits like “More Than A Feeling,” “Peace Of Mind,” and “Amanda.”

DeCarlo’s life changed dramatically in 2007 after the tragic death of Boston’s original singer, Brad Delp, who died at age 55.

At the time, he was working a regular job in the credit department at a Home Depot in North Carolina. Like many fans grieving Delp’s passing, he began recording his own covers of Boston’s songs.

After uploading the recordings to MySpace, he sent the link to the band’s management team, not expecting what would happen next.

The recordings impressed Scholz enough that he personally contacted DeCarlo. Soon after, the lifelong fan was invited to perform with Boston on tour.

The unexpected opportunity launched DeCarlo into the spotlight as the band’s lead or co-lead vocalist beginning in 2007.

After joining Boston, DeCarlo quickly became an important part of the band’s live performances.

Over the years, he performed for thousands of fans across multiple tours, helping keep the band’s iconic sound alive for a new generation of listeners.

His remarkable journey, from a small-town fan to touring musician, later became the subject of his audiobook, “Unlikely Rockstar – The Tommy DeCarlo Story.”

The project chronicled the moment his dream became reality. According to the synopsis, “On a warm summer night in August 2007 at the Bank Of America Pavilion in Boston, Massachusetts, Tommy DeCarlo took to the stage and for the first time with his favorite band, Boston.”

The description continued by reflecting on the incredible path his career eventually took.

It read, “Fourteen years, six tours, and 326 shows later, listen as he takes you on his most unlikely journey from Utica, New York to touring the world as the vocalist for one of the most iconic rock and roll bands of all time.”
