Actor and musician Donald Glover is assuring fans that the much-anticipated “Community” movie is moving forward. Glover, who played Troy Barnes on the cult-favorite sitcom, confirmed that production is still planned, raising excitement among fans who are eager to see the beloved cast reunite and continue the story of the Greendale Community College students.
Donald Glover Teases ‘Community’ Movie Will ‘Happen Soon’
It’s been several years since the “Community” movie was confirmed, but there have been delays due to different circumstances. Entertainment Tonight caught up with Glover, who shared an update about the project.
Glover said, “We were just on the text chain talking about it,” presumably referring to his former “Community” castmates who will be involved in the movie.
“We’re working on it right now. I know everybody’s been saying that for forever, but, I swear to you, I’m not lying about this,” the actor said, adding that he thinks “it’s going to happen soon.” The interviewer said, “I’m gonna hold you to it,” to which Glover responded, “Hold me to it.”
The Movie Was Confirmed In 2022
Peacock announced an order for a feature-length film of “Community” back in 2022, seven years after the end of the series following season 6. The news delighted fans, and they noted the famous line from the series, “six seasons and a movie,” is finally coming true.
Dan Harmon, the brainchild of the series, will serve as an executive producer and writer, along with Andrew Guest. Most of the original cast members will be returning for the movie, including Glover, Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Ken Jeong, Jim Rash, and Yvette Nicole Brown.
“‘Six seasons and a movie’ started out as a cheeky line from ‘Community’s early seasons and quickly ignited a passionate fan movement for this iconic hilarious and cool (cool, cool) NBC comedy,” NBCUniversal Television and Streaming chairman Susan Rovner said in 2022. “We’re incredibly grateful that 15 years later, we are able to deliver fans this promised movie…” she said.
Danny Glover Shared Updates In 2024

In February 2024, Glover revealed that the script was complete and he was completely interested in being part of the project, adding, “It’s really just a schedule thing but I’m in. I’m all in.”
In May that same year, Glover addressed speculations that he was the reason behind the movie’s delay. As he told Deadline, “Everybody is hating on me on the internet and it’s not me! They’re like, ‘We know that you’re the reason.’ Maybe I was last year — maybe — but not this time,” he stated.
At that time, the actor insisted that the movie was still in the works. “It’s happening but I don’t know when. I swear, it’s happening,” he confirmed.
Other ‘Community’ Stars Have Talked About The Movie
Since the movie was announced, several “Community” cast members have spoken about the project. In 2025, McHale confirmed that they had received funding for the project, which is one of the hardest things they have to secure. However, he also added that it was difficult to get the schedules in order.
“It’s come down to scheduling. And so, I think it’ll be done by — I think it’ll shoot at some point this year. Probably in the autumn. That’s my prediction and that’s also my hope,” McHale told UsWeekly.
Jeong, who played Spanish teacher Señor Chang in the series, has also discussed the long-awaited movie. While not divulging any details, Jeong said the script “made me emotional, and just brought me right back.” Like the other “Community” stars, Jeong said the project will certainly push forward, but he just doesn’t know when.
They Were Close To Filming The Movie At One Point
In February, writer Andrew Guest revealed that they were once close to filming the movie after the writers’ and actors’ strikes in 2023, but the plans were derailed. As he noted in “The Watch” podcast, all the cast members were available at that time.
“All of them wanted to do it. We had a line producer. We had a script that we were in the process of starting to rewrite and one of our actors’ projects sort of came in conflict in terms of timing,” Guest explained, not naming the actor.
If Glover’s latest update is anything to go by, Greendale may finally be back in session sooner rather than later.
