Frankie Muniz is clearing up years of speculation about his memory issues, sharing that past comments were taken out of context. The “Malcolm in the Middle” star recently addressed the long-running narrative, explaining that while he did have a bad memory, the public’s perception became far more dramatic than reality.

Frankie Muniz is clearing up misconceptions about his memory issues. On the “Inside of You” podcast with “Smallville” actor Michael Rosenbaum, released on April 7, 40-year-old Muniz discussed past reports that were “taken out of context.”

Back in 2017, Muniz competed on “Dancing with the Stars,” and one of the themes in the weeks-long competition was “The Most Memorable Year.” As he shared back then, he had no recollection of many of his experiences, including filming for “Maclom in the Middle,” which he starred in for six years. “It makes me a little sad. Things pop back into my mind [that] I should have remembered,” he said. The media ran with it, claiming that the actor suffered from severe memory loss and even amnesia.

“The story of that was taken out of context… All these stories have come out where people are like, ‘You don’t even know your [own] wife.’ I just have a bad memory,” Muniz told Rosenbaum.

The Actor Believes His Bad Memory Stems From ‘Pretending’ As An Actor

Muniz shared his theory about why he has such a bad memory, telling the podcast host that he has no issues memorizing lines. However, details of his “everyday life” are another story, adding that he doesn’t remember much from his days as a child actor.

“I’ve also been an actor my whole life, where every single day I’m pretending to be somebody else and having somebody else’s emotions and somebody’s happiness or somebody’s sadness,” he elaborated, adding that when the director yells “Cut!” he forgets about the scene and moves on to the next.

“I’m so used to going, ‘Oh, I’m done with that.’ And I move on so that I don’t even take it in. Even my real life. Even my real emotions,” said Muniz.

Frankie Muniz Has Had Nine Concussions

Muniz also opened up about health issues in the past, admitting to having “episodes” where he experienced vision loss and couldn’t recognize people. He was told they were mini strokes, but he later found out it was a misdiagnosis, and what he actually had were aura migraines, as reported by Huff Post.

The condition, per the Cleveland Clinic, causes sensory issues that act as warning signs before a migraine headache. Symptoms may include spots or flashes in your vision, ringing in your ears, tingling in your limbs, and slurred speech.

Moreover, Muniz has had nine concussions stemming from childhood recklessness, sports, and accidents during his racing career. “I do think I have a bad memory, but it’s not like I have amnesia,” Muniz told Rosenbaum, adding that his nine concussions probably don’t help.

Frankie Muniz’s Transition From Acting To Racing

Muniz rose to fame for his portrayal of the titular character in the sitcom “Malcolm in the Middle,” which ran for six seasons from 2000 to 2006. He also appeared in movies, such as “My Dog Skip” and “Big Fat Liar.”

Following the conclusion of the sitcom, Muniz took a break from Hollywood to pursue racecar driving. He became a professional racecar driver in 2006 and has remained active in the sport ever since, receiving accolades for his accomplishments behind the wheel.

In 2023, Muniz said he was grateful for his success in the entertainment industry, which allowed him to try other things in his life, such as racing. He stressed that it wasn’t just a hobby, but a sport that he wanted to excel at. “If I wanted to race cars, I could do it at a much lower level and have the same enjoyment. I want to make it to the top, and I’m going for that,” he told CNBC Make It.

It’s been 20 years since “Malcolm in the Middle” concluded, and now, the cast is back for a four-part revival series. Muniz and his former castmates, Bryan Cranston (Hal), Jane Kaczmarek (Lois), Christopher Masterson (Francis), and Justin Berfield (Reese), are all reprising their roles, with Erik Per Sullivan (Dewey) replaced by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark.

The mini-series follows Malcolm as he is drawn back to his chaotic family’s orbit when Hal and Lois insist he attend their 40th wedding anniversary celebration. “It’s Malcolm figuring out that those things that made him crazy actually made him be the person he is now,” Muniz said in an interview with Slate.

“Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair” will premiere on Hulu and Disney+ on April 10.
