Gayle King has spent decades building one of television’s most recognizable friendships with Oprah Winfrey, but behind the scenes, the relationship once became the center of deeply personal frustration.
During a candid new interview, the veteran broadcaster admitted years of “secret lesbian” rumors pushed her into emotional disagreements with Winfrey, especially as the gossip intensified after her divorce.
While the speculation once left her angry and overwhelmed, King now says she has finally reached a point where the constant chatter no longer controls her peace.
Gayle King Opens Up About Long-Running Rumors
Gayle King spoke openly about the rumors during an appearance on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast with host Alex Cooper.
For years, King and Oprah Winfrey have faced speculation questioning whether their bond was more than friendship. The rumors followed the pair through television success, public appearances, and decades of close companionship.
King admitted the gossip became especially painful after her 1993 divorce from William Bumpus, when tabloids attempted to tie the breakdown of her marriage to the claims.
“It used to really bother me,” King confessed per the Daily Mail while reflecting on the difficult period.
The longtime journalist revealed that one tabloid story deeply upset her because of the accusations it made about her relationship with Winfrey.
“The National Enquirer did a story about that’s the reason for the divorce, because they’re secretly gay,” she recalled.
King firmly denied the speculation while also making it clear she sees nothing wrong with being gay.
“Number one, if we were gay, we would tell you because, believe me, there’s nothing wrong with it. It’s just, I prefer a man,” she explained.
The television host also reiterated that neither she nor Winfrey ever felt the need to hide anything from the public.
“We would tell you,” King insisted again during the conversation.
Gayle King Reveals Emotional Disagreement With Oprah

As the rumors continued over the years, King admitted that she eventually became frustrated enough to confront Winfrey directly.
According to King, she repeatedly begged her longtime friend to publicly address the gossip on television because of its impact on her personal life.
“I would say to her, ‘You’ve got to say something on your show, because it’s hard enough for me to get a date on a Saturday night and now people think I’m a lesbian, you’ve got to say something!,’” King recalled.
The broadcaster described how the conversations turned into genuine disagreements between the two close friends.
“And she said ‘No, let it be’ and I said ‘No, you’ve go too say something’ and she said, ‘No. Just leave it alone,’” King shared.
The exchange left King feeling frustrated because she believed Winfrey’s situation was very different from her own.
“I said, ‘Well, that’s fine for you to say. You have somebody. I don’t,’” she remembered telling her friend.
At the time, Winfrey was already in her long-term relationship with Stedman Graham, whom she has been with since 1986.
King Says Social Media Changed Everything

Although the rumors once deeply affected her emotionally, Gayle King explained that age and experience eventually changed how she handles public criticism.
The “CBS Mornings” anchor admitted that people still question her relationship with Oprah Winfrey even today, but she no longer feels consumed by the gossip the way she once did.
“So it used to really bother me. And now, even today, there’s still people that say, ‘Well, you know, the truth is…’ and I don’t care,” she said.
King explained that she has reached a point where outside opinions no longer hold the same power over her emotions.
“I’ve now gotten to the point in my life that very few things get to me,” she added.
Still, she acknowledged that social media has made public criticism much harsher than it once was.
“Because when you go on social media, it is an accelerator on hate,” King continued.
The veteran journalist said maintaining inner peace ultimately became more important than trying to silence strangers online.
“As long as I feel good about what I’m doing, the people I respect and trust are okay with it. Otherwise, you’ll drive yourself nuts. So now I really don’t care,” she added.
Oprah Winfrey And Gayle King’s Friendship Started Decades Ago

Despite the rumors and public speculation, the friendship between King and Winfrey has remained remarkably strong for nearly 50 years.
The two first met while working together at WJZ-TV in Baltimore during the early stages of their broadcasting careers.
At the time, a snowstorm unexpectedly brought them together in a way neither could have predicted.
Winfrey previously told PEOPLE that she invited King to stay at her apartment because of the dangerous weather conditions.
“We ended up talking all night long,” Winfrey recalled.
The media icon added, “We’ve literally been friends ever since.”
Over the decades, their friendship survived career changes, public scrutiny, personal heartbreak, and relentless media fascination surrounding their bond.
King Says Oprah Winfrey Never Overshadowed Her

Gayle King also pushed back against another common assumption about her friendship with Winfrey during the interview.
Although Oprah became one of the most powerful women in entertainment, King insisted she never felt diminished standing beside her famous friend.
“I never see myself in her shadow. I always say I see myself in her light,” King explained.
The broadcaster made it clear she never viewed Oprah’s success as something threatening or competitive.
“And I do mean that. I never thought, ‘God, I wish I could be her,’” she added.
Later in the interview, King became emotional while reflecting on the trust they still share after all these years together.
“Once you’ve been in the inner circle of anyone’s life, it’s a really privileged place to be,” she said.
King concluded by emphasizing how deeply she values their friendship and loyalty to one another.
She said, “And I hold that very sacred. I know I can trust her with anything. And she, me.”
