Hilary Duff is opening up about an experience involving her late ex, Aaron Carter. In a recent conversation, the singer recalled a psychic reading in which Carter reportedly came through and left a message for her. Duff and Carter were in an on-and-off relationship in their early teens and ultimately parted ways in 2003.

In an episode of the podcast “Las Culturistas” with hosts Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, released on April 1, Duff shared one of her experiences during a psychic reading. The singer and actress said that despite not strictly “living by it,” she likes to have a little bit of “fun” with it and “validate” her path in life.

Duff explained that it was done anonymously over the phone. “I was, like, ‘How do I start? Do I start asking you questions?'” Duff asked. The psychic said people who want to communicate with her will show up, adding, “There’s someone here. Aaron with two A’s,” the psychic said. Duff confirmed that she had a childhood ex-boyfriend named Aaron, and the psychic asked, “Are you Hilary Duff?”

The “Lizzie McGuire” alum didn’t share the message Carter had left for her, but she said that she still thinks of him occasionally.

Duff also shared that she’s friends with Carter’s twin sister, Angel. “Our kids go to the same school. She’s a lovely literal angel of a person. We’re very close, and we talk about Aaron often,” Duff said.

In 2025, Angel shared the last conversation she had with her brother, which occurred three days before his passing. Angel said it wasn’t a pleasant one, as Carter said she was the reason why he was doing drugs. “I was angry, honestly,” Angel told PEOPLE.

Angel also revealed that the last time she saw her twin in person was in a courtroom, three years before his death. Angel and her other brother, Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter, filed restraining orders against him due to his “increasingly alarming behavior.” Angel said she was finally opening up to the idea of fixing her relationship with Carter, but he passed away.

Duff and Carter started dating in 2000 when they were 13 years old. The following year, Carter made a guest appearance on “Lizzie McGuire,” where he played himself. In the episode titled “Aaron Carter’s Coming to Town,” Lizzie finds out the pop star is in town to shoot a music video, and she and her friends sneak onto the set to meet him. The two have a moment alone, and Carter ends up kissing Lizzie.

Carter and Duff in 2003, and a couple of years later, the former candidly talked about what caused the separation. He said he got bored more than a year into the relationship and started dating Lindsay Lohan.

The breakup didn’t last long, and Carter and Duff got back together for a short while before splitting up for good. “I ended up cheating on Hilary with her best friend. That’s nothing to smile about. She really got her heart broken from me and I’m sorry for that,” Carter said in an interview.

In 2014, Carter reposted a photo of Duff and added the caption, “Hilary Duff is flawless.” He also wrote, “Don’t be that stupid douche that loses the love of your life forever… Like me,” adding that he would spend the rest of his life improving himself so he could “get back to her.”

Months later, Duff was asked about the post on “Watch What Happens Live.” Duff was still married to her first husband, Mike Comrie, at that time. “Ugh! I don’t know,” she said, referring to Carter’s tweet. “I don’t really know what to say about it. It was so many years ago. I literally haven’t seen him in…” she trailed off, adding that it feels “uncomfortable.”

Carter died on November 5, 2022. He was discovered in the bathtub of his home, and his official cause of death was listed as accidental drowning. According to reports, he became incapacitated after inhaling the compressed gas difluoroethane and taking Xanax. He was 34 years old.

A day after Carter’s passing, Duff took to Instagram and addressed a message to her ex, which read, “I’m deeply sorry that life was so hard for you and that you had to struggle in-front of the whole world. You had a charm that was absolutely effervescent… boy did my teenage self love you deeply.”
