During a recent appearance on “The Bobby Bones Show,” Jo Dee Messina recalled the harsh criticism she faced while trying to land her first major record deal in Nashville.

The “Bye Bye” singer explained that the label’s feedback was delivered directly to her producer during negotiations. “I remember I got turned down by a record label in Nashville. They said I was too fat,” she said. “They told my producer that, ‘Oh, if she was 10 pounds lighter, we’d have signed her.'”

The blunt comment left a lasting impression on the country star.

Even though the rejection happened early in her career, Jo Dee Messina admitted the moment has stayed with her. Reflecting on the experience years later, she said the sting never completely faded. “It’s 30 years later, I’m still talking about it. I didn’t let it go,” she admitted.

Despite the painful rejection, Messina said one person in her life helped her stay focused on her dreams: her sister. According to the singer, her sister encouraged her to keep pushing forward and reminded her that rejection is often part of the music business.

“She told me, ‘They say you have to get passed on a thousand times before you get a deal.'” The advice helped Messina stay motivated during a time when many aspiring artists might have walked away from the industry.

Messina’s perseverance ultimately paid off, as she went on to become one of country music’s biggest female stars of the late 1990s.
