Lisa Rinna is sharing the terrifying attack her mother, Lois Rinna, endured at the hands of a co-worker, who later became a serial killer. The actress shares the story in an episode of “IMPACT x Nightline,” where she reveals the shocking details of the ordeal and her mother’s impeccable resilience.

Lisa and Lois had a close bond, describing their relationship as deeply loving, which made learning of the attack all the more devastating. Lois passed away in 2021 at 93 years old.

ABC News’ “Impact X Nightline” is a news magazine series that combines investigative reporting with in-depth storytelling. In a season 4 episode that premiered on April 9, titled “Terror on the Trails,” Lisa Rinna shared the story of how her mother, Lois, survived a brutal attack.

As the “Real Housewives” alum recounted, Lois was waiting at a bus stop on the way to an appointment with a dentist when a man she knew, David Carpenter, approached, inviting her to meet his new baby. Lois said she had to go to the dentist, and Carpenter offered to drive her.

However, Lois knew something was wrong when Carpenter drove in the wrong direction. He stopped the car, grabbed a knife, and attempted to stab Lois. She was quick to grab the knife, but in the process, she severed two of her fingers.

Unbeknownst to Carpenter, a military policeman followed their vehicle, and as he approached, Carpenter panicked. He grabbed a hammer and violently attacked Lois over the head. “The MP shoots David Carpenter in the stomach. Doesn’t kill him,” Lisa shared.

As a result of the violent assault, Lois had a metal plate placed in her head and spent three months recovering in the hospital. Journalist Ana Garcia, known for hosting “True Crime News,” said if the policeman hadn’t come to Lois’ rescue, she would have likely been Carpenter’s first murder victim.

“I think my mom was positive and never played a victim, never felt sorry for herself, and she could have been the most miserable, f-cked up, traumatized human being. And I never saw that.” Lisa said.

Lisa recounted the story in March during an appearance on the podcast “Howie Mandel Does Stuff,” saying that Carpenter was her mother’s co-worker at a post office in San Francisco. Lisa said Lois “felt sorry” for Carpenter due to his stutter.

One of the red flags that Lois caught when she was in the car with him was that his stutter had vanished. Lisa said her mom asked why he was no longer stuttering, to which Carpenter replied, “I don’t know, Lois. Something just comes over me.”

According to the “Melrose Place” actress, she wasn’t aware of what had happened to her mother until Lois told her the real story when she was 18 years old. The attack happened about three years before Lisa was born, and all she knew was that her mother had severed fingers and a loss of taste and hearing, but she didn’t know there was a bigger reason behind it.

David Carpenter Is The Oldest Death Row Inmate Alive

After Lois’ attack, Carpenter pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison and was released in 1969. In the ’70s, he committed several sexual assaults in the Bay Area. He was in and out of prison for various offenses, including kidnapping and auto theft.

It is believed that Carpenter started killing sometime in 1979. He would hide among the trees on hiking trails before sexually assaulting and killing his victims, earning him the nickname “Trailside Killer.” Carpenter has been tied to eight confirmed victims, with more than 10 others believed to be connected to him.

The Trailside Killer was apprehended in 1981 and was sentenced to death in 1984. In 1988, he was again tried for five additional murders, receiving another death sentence. Carpenter remains behind bars and is the oldest death row inmate alive in the U.S. at 95 years old.

Lisa Rinna’s Mother Died In 2021

Lois died on November 15, 2021, at 93 years old. Lisa revealed that her mother had been in hospice following a “devastating” stroke on November 10. Six years prior, Lois suffered a stroke that required extensive rehabilitation.

In an episode of “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” Lisa talked about her mother’s death and said that despite knowing the end was coming, it was still a devastating blow. She revealed that Lois wanted “no feeding tube, no resuscitation. Nothing.”

“She was such a good, good human being. She was just such a light. I’m pretty lucky that I came from that,” the actress said.
