Martha Stewart recently discussed a memorable moment on the basketball court involving NBA star Jalen Brunson: the time he accidentally broke her toe. The two discussed the incident during a podcast, sharing details and reflecting on the blunder with humor.

Though the broken toe left Stewart in pain, the TV personality found the situation “funny” and learned her lesson about the type of shoes to wear while sitting courtside.

In a guest appearance on the “Roomates Show” hosted by Brunson and his New York Knicks teammate Josh Hart, Stewart discussed the time when the former accidentally crushed her toe during a game.

The incident happened back in May 2025 in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals when the Knicks were playing against the Indiana Pacers at Madison Square Garden. Minutes before the end of the game, Brunson chased the ball into the stands where Stewart was sitting courtside, and he crashed into her, breaking her toe.

Hart asked Brunson, “Did you ever apologize for that, Jalen?” Stewart confirmed that the basketball player did, and even sent her a basketball that she gave her grandson.

The TV Personality Shared Her Story With Jimmy Fallon

In December 2025, Stewart recalled the same incident on “The Tonight Show,” telling host Jimmy Fallon about what happened. “He comes crashing down, sits on my lap, and I grabbed his arm, and his arm was, like, icy cold,” she told the host. She was surprised that Brunson caused damage, saying he’s “not even big” at 6 feet 2 inches, but noted that he had “big feet.”

At that moment, Stewart immediately knew her big toe was broken, but she couldn’t get up just yet as the game went into overtime. Stewart then said she told Brunson, “It’s okay,” adding that the player wasn’t aware that he broke her foot.

When asked whether she had talked to Brunson about it, Stewart said while laughing, “I told his parents.”

Jalen Brunson Said He Didn’t Remember It Happening

Brunson said he didn’t remember crushing Stewart’s toe. She again recalled how it happened, saying, “You jumped up really fast. And I remember saying to you, ‘It’s okay.’ You had no idea that you had hurt me. I didn’t say you hurt me, but I said, ‘It’s okay.’ It wasn’t okay at all,” Stewart noted with a laugh.

Stewart then ran into Brunson’s parents at the Hamptons, and she told them about how their son had fractured her toe. They had a good laugh about it, and Brunson’s father, Knicks’ assistant coach Rick Brunson, FaceTimed his son so he could apologize to Stewart. The basketball player then sent an autographed ball to the TV personality.

Martha Stewart Said It Was Her Fault

According to Stewart, she went to the Hospital for Special Surgery immediately after the game to get her foot checked. It turned out she had a fracture, telling Brunson that they named it the “Stewart-Brunson fracture.”

“I have an X-ray, I’m going to leave you a picture of it. It was actually a break,” she said, adding that it took about a year for her toe to fully heal. Despite being an accident, Brunson said he doesn’t feel great about it.

The 84-year-old businesswoman took the blame, saying it was her fault for wearing open-toed shoes while sitting so close to the action during a basketball game, and she has learned her lesson. “I look back at it as just something silly, stupid, and funny. It was stupid of me,” she said.

Martha Stewart Is An Avid New York Knicks Fan

Stewart is a big fan of the New York Knicks, often seen attending games over the years at Madison Square Garden with friends and family. She has returned to watching live games after the accident, and she was most recently spotted when the Knicks won against the Washington Wizards on March 22. Noticeably, she was wearing closed shoes at that time.

Elsewhere in the interview, Brunson asked her if she were the coach, what she would tell Hart if he “bs’s in practice.” “I would tell him that the rest of the team members were really counting on him, and what the hell is he f-cking around for?” Stewart said.
