Jordan beat out an impressive slate of talented actors, including Timothée Chalamet, who portrayed Marty Mauser in “Marty Supreme.” Several social media users reacted to Jordan’s monumental win, praising the former child star for achieving something only a few actors before him had managed. Others, meanwhile, were incensed by his victory, calling out the Academy for allegedly playing favorites.

Jordan, who has become one of the industry’s biggest names and leading men over the years, took home the Academy Award for Best Actor on Sunday, March 16. The actor was nominated for his work as Smoke and Stack in Ryan Coogler’s production “Sinners.”

The audience inside the Dolby Theatre was electrified following Jordan’s win, giving the actor a standing ovation and much praise. During his speech, Jordan, who previously starred in “Black Panther,” gave a special shoutout to his family, the studio’s executives, and Coogler, who won the Oscar for Best Screenplay earlier in the night.

Jordan’s win was also celebrated because he joined an elite group of Black actors to have won the Best Actor Award. “I stand here because of the people that came before me,” he said, also showing respect to Halle Berry, the only Black woman to win Best Actress at the Oscars.

Jordan went on to explain how much being amongst a small list of A-list actors and actresses meant to him. He also thanked his industry peers and his global fanbase for supporting him.

“Thank you everybody in this room and everybody at home for supporting me over my career; I feel it,” he said. “I know you guys want me to do well, and I want to do that because you guys bet on me. So thank you for keeping betting on me.”

The excitement for Jordan wasn’t just reserved for those in the room where it happened; social media users were also overcome with emotion.

Online, several netizens rushed to congratulate the actor for his win, with one saying, “He deserves this! He did absolutely incredible in ‘Sinners.'”

Another user wrote, “Well deserved! Oscars KNEW not to mess up this year!”

A third user seemed to imply that Jordan was the only correct choice, stating, “He played two roles; there was no competition.”

Jordan’s Win Receives Backlash From Other Online Users

Meanwhile, X users shared a different response, with one calling the Academy “a disgrace.”

The user went on to say that Chalamet should’ve won an Oscar for his work in the 2024 film “Dune: Part Two,” but suggested the actor “was robbed” once again.

Another user stated that they simply weren’t entertained by “Sinners,” sharing that they lasted “maybe 45 minutes.”

Someone else said the Oscars are “no longer a judge of cinema, but a clearinghouse for social debts.”

Jordan Said He ‘Cried’ While Watching ‘Sinners’

During a previous interview with W Magazine, Jordan opened up about his role in “Sinners” and shared how much being part of the film meant to him.

“It definitely presented a challenge, and I had a little bit of anxiety. But I was equally excited about doing something that pushed me out of my comfort zone,” he said before praising his “longtime collaborator and friend” Coogler.

“Ryan is an incredible world builder, so those were all on the page. There were subtle nuances and behavioral tics that I found along the way, but the personalities of them, for the most part, were on the page,” Jordan added.

Regarding the film, Jordan also revealed that he got a bit emotional while watching it back. “I cried during ‘Sinners,'” he shared before admitting he also “cried during the making of the film.”

“I had a really good cry watching the last season of the anime My Hero Academia, when Bakugo, a character from the first season, has this emotional moment where he finally gets recognized by one of his mentors and idols. It was beautiful,” he finished.
