The philanthropist surprised the people at Kyiv with a mission to provide succor, relief, and remind the people of Ukraine that they are not alone in the struggle. He stopped at Kyiv railway station on Thursday morning, overnight from Poland, to give his two cents on the tense relationship between Ukraine and Russia over the years.

As shared by ITV News, the author praised Ukraine for their bravery in defending Europe’s eastern flank, which is very important in their history. Harry assured the fighters and those he met at the Kyiv Security Conference that they are not alone and have earned respect from people all over the world.

The father of two addressed senior Western defense and government officials in Ukraine’s capital city on how the conflict between Ukraine and Russia has evolved from a simple fight about territory. Harry appealed to the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, to put an end to the aggressive attack on Ukraine, while calling on US leadership to honor its international treaty obligations.

Ukraine and Russia have been stuck in their contentious conflict for more than four years now, coupled with the ongoing situation in the Middle East between Iran, the United States, and Israel. Harry expressed to delegates at the Thursday conference that the world must not become numb to these hardships being faced by the citizens of the country.

The prince’s itinerary in Ukraine includes a visit to the Halo Trust charity, a de-mining charity with a branch in Angola, which his late mother, Princess Diana, famously supported in 1997. Landmines and other Russian ordnance that have been abandoned in the regions where they have been used in the past continue to kill and maim civilians.

There are currently 1,300 de-miners working on missions of the Halo Trust in Ukraine, the biggest in the world. According to Harry, he is eager to see his friends again, reconnect with the Invictus community, and support those helping Ukraine in the fight.

The Netflix star made reference to his background as a soldier who perfectly understands service, as a humanitarian who has seen the cost of war, and a friend of Ukrainian society. As noted by PEOPLE, he celebrated the resilience of the Ukrainian people.

However, he established that there are still invisible costs to be paid by those who have witnessed these dehumanizing conditions. In his words, “Beyond the visible losses, there is the invisible cost: The trauma carried by those returning from the front. The psychological strain on families living under constant threat and bombardment.”

He continued to tell the delegates that he had seen the extent of the strength of the Ukrainian people through the members of the Invictus community. Harry celebrated the ability of humanity to rebuild itself from the worst of ruins, restoring bodies and lives through people who truly care. The royal added that he is fully convinced such a spirit extends beyond the frontlines of war.

Prince Harry was in Kyiv on a similar surprise visit last September when he was invited by an organization passionate about supporting Ukrainians who suffered injuries from the war. As stated by the BBC, the Duke of Sussex arrived in Kyiv via train with a promise to do all he can to help injured persons get back on their feet.

Harry engaged people retiring from military service at a panel discussion organized in Kyiv’s National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War, and reassured them that better days are ahead. According to him, it is possible that these personnel feel lost from time to time, but opening up and sharing their concerns with their loved ones will make things so much better.

Harry also met privately with Ukraine’s Minister for Veteran Affairs, Natalia Kalmykova, and attended a fundraising lunch in support of the Superhumans Center in Lviv. The father of two was reportedly joined by a team from his Invictus Games Foundation as Ukraine was given special permission to compete in the games by President Zelensky in 2022, just months after their conflict with Russia began.

Spokesperson to the couple responded to the controversial reactions that trailed their visit to the country, which ran from April 14 to April 17. During the trip, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited the Royal Children’s Hospital and attended the InterEdge Psychosocial Safety Summit, where he was a keynote speaker.

Harry and Meghan’s trip ended with a sailing event with Invictus Australia members on Sydney Harbor. The trip was reportedly a very private one and centered on the couple doing meaningful work, including prioritizing listening, learning, and supporting communities rather than promotion.

However, sources from the royal palace claimed that the palace is not happy about the royals going on tour against the late queen’s wishes that there should be no half-stepping for the former working royals once they stepped back from working.
