Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s journey from senior royals to private life in California has been marked by both public scrutiny and family tension.

Experts claim challenges arose for the Sussexes soon after their 2018 wedding at Frogmore Cottage, from Meghan allegedly influencing Harry’s speeches to property disputes. Their departure in 2020 followed candid discussions about royal life and independence.

According to royal commentator Hugo Vickers, Prince Harry may have underestimated the challenges that came with marrying Meghan, as their dynamic reportedly began to shift soon after their wedding.

Following their 2018 marriage, the couple moved into Frogmore Cottage, a residence on the Windsor Estate gifted by Queen Elizabeth II.

At the time, there were no obvious signs of tension, but Vickers claims issues gradually surfaced. He alleges Meghan was once reprimanded by the late queen over how she addressed members of the gardening staff and also pushed for changes around the property, including restricting vehicle access near a nearby sports field because it was visible from their home.

In his book, Vickers also suggests Meghan played a strong role in shaping Harry’s public image, even reviewing his speeches.

During their 2018 tour of Australia, the royal author claims Harry seemed different, with his speeches having a Californian twist.

“Observers noted that Prince Harry’s speeches already had a Californian ring to them,” Vickers wrote, per Page Six. “In October 2018, they had visited Australia, deemed a successful tour, but every speech that Harry made was vetted by Meghan.”

Vickers further noted that this subtle shift made Harry seem like a prince who had lost his way.

By 2019, however, Vickers described Harry as appearing increasingly uneasy in public, suggesting a visible strain in the couple’s dynamic.

“The following year, 2019, he appeared uncomfortable, and the rapport between them looked nil. He seemed unhappy on Easter Day, and in a general sense, a man who had ‘bitten off more than he could chew,'” the author wrote.

That same year, during a trip to Africa, Meghan openly spoke about her struggles, which became a turning point leading up to the couple’s decision to step back.

By early 2020, Harry had reportedly hoped to strike a compromise that would allow him to remain partially involved in royal life while becoming financially independent. However, after discussions at Sandringham with senior aides, he was told the arrangement would have to be “all in or all out.”

The couple ultimately chose to step down as senior working royals in January 2020 and later relocated to California. In 2023, they were asked to vacate Frogmore Cottage shortly after the release of Harry’s memoir, “Spare.”

Videos show the siblings hunting for eggs on the lawn, with Lilibet wearing bunny ears and a pink floral dress, while Archie decorated eggs using a “Dinomazing Egg Decorator.”

Other clips featured the children holding baskets of treats and even the family’s chickens enjoying fresh lettuce. Meghan captioned the post simply: “Happy Easter!”

On Easter in April 2025, Meghan shared a charming Instagram clip capturing a surprise visit from a mother duck and her ducklings.

The video, seemingly filmed in the driveway of her California home, was set to Louis Jordan’s classic tune “Choo Choo Ch’Boogie.”

Alongside the clip, the Duchess of Sussex wrote, “Wishing you a Happy Easter full of love….and!”

Meanwhile, journalist Tom Bower has painted a more contentious picture in his upcoming book, published by The Times.

Bower claims that Queen Camilla told a friend Meghan had “brainwashed” Harry, describing her as a “divisive agent” and suggesting she was seen as a “threat” by William and Kate.

A spokesperson for Harry and Meghan dismissed the claims, accusing Bower of crossing “the line from criticism into fixation,” and stating that he has “made a career out of constructing ever more elaborate theories about people he does not know and has never met.”
