The British Royal Family has been plagued by cancer long before the 2024 double-diagnosis incident of King Charles and Kate Middleton.

In early 2024, both the King and his daughter-in-law, Catherine, Princess of Wales, announced their cancer diagnoses. The unprecedented event left many in shock, but the palace effectively managed the situation.

It appears the Royal Family was swift to act, thanks to their experience dealing with the late Prince Philip. The former Duke of Edinburgh privately battled pancreatic cancer in the last eight years of his life, a situation that mirrors King Charles’s health crisis.

According to a new book by historian Hugo Vickers, Prince Philip was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2013. He claimed “doctors had detected a shadow on his pancreas, and had cut him right across his stomach” to investigate the cause.

“The verdict was inoperable pancreatic cancer,” Vickers wrote in the book serialized in the Daily Mail. The cancer diagnosis came eight years before Philip took his final breath on April 9, 2021, after battling his alleged condition without the public’s knowledge.

At the time, his cause of death was listed as old age, but it appears his hidden cancer may have played a part in his demise. Philip retired from his royal duties in 2017 and spent much of his final years primarily at Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate, where he was reportedly at his happiest.

The story of Philip’s hidden pancreatic cancer battle mirrors the claims about his oldest son’s health crisis. InTouch Weekly previously reported in 2024 that Buckingham Palace had confirmed King Charles was diagnosed with cancer, but did not specify which form.

The Palace’s decision to protect Charles’ condition did not stop sources from spilling the tea. An insider claimed the monarch’s diagnosis was an open secret among royal staffers, while another alleged that many believed Charles’ condition was worse than what was known.

As for what type of cancer Charles was diagnosed with, sources claimed it was pancreatic cancer. They also alleged that doctors had given the King two years to live. “Even before the diagnosis, there were concerns about his health,” an insider shared.

Buckingham Palace announced in February 2024 that Charles had been diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer. The news came after the King underwent surgery for a benign enlarged prostate on January 26.

One source argued that Charles continued public engagements after the cancer announcement to showcase the throne’s unyielding will. They claimed he wanted “to ensure people that he’s still able to perform his duties as king.”

Fast forward to March 2026, The News reported that Charles’ days as monarch might end sooner rather than later. Insiders claimed he could abdicate the throne to his oldest son and heir apparent, Prince William, amid his ongoing cancer battle.

According to the report, Palace insiders claimed Charles could step down as King following the Trooping the Colour event in June. They added that William and his wife, Catherine, were already being prepared to assume their new roles as rulers.

A source cited Charles’ health as the key reason for his possible abdication “in a matter of weeks,” referencing a recent state banquet. They explained that the Prince and Princess of Wales had radiated youth and confidence at the event, while Charles “really struggled.”

Courtiers also claimed that the King was “struggling to keep up with his already pared-down roster,” leading to “an increase in urgent talks about his abdication.” The outlet noted that Prince William was concerned about Charles’ workload, while Queen Camilla reportedly encouraged him to continue his royal duties.

The Blast covered more details about Philip’s hidden cancer battle, reporting that the author claimed the red flags had started early. The late Duke was rushed to the hospital in 2011 for chest pains, two years before his alleged cancer diagnosis.

After receiving the pancreatic cancer diagnosis, Philip allegedly refused to retreat from public life. He reportedly returned to his royal duties shortly after, surprising many who believed his time was up. However, behind closed doors, Philip and his wife, Queen Elizabeth II, had a complex union.

They reportedly began living separate lives after Philip stepped back from his duties in 2017 and moved to Wood Farm. According to the book, the late Queen was “absolutely furious” that her husband died the same way he often left her side, “without saying goodbye.” Despite this claim, Elizabeth II soon returned to her duties, continuing official engagements in the days leading up to Philip’s funeral.
