Helen Mirren’s relationship with AI has changed dramatically over the past two years. 

At the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, Oscar winner Mirren revealed a surprising approach to managing her personal health with AI, which is a far cry from her previous stance against artificial intelligence. 

Other high-profile figures have similarly aired their candid views on AI, including Reese Witherspoon, who previously encouraged more women to get involved in AI.

Mirren recently shocked the public while promoting her new psychological thriller, “A Talent for Murder.”

Sharing the stage alongside co-stars Alden Ehrenreich and Olivia Cooke, the legendary actress admitted that traditional medicine plays zero role in her daily routine. 

Instead of scheduling check-ups, she chooses to bypass medical professionals in favor of modern artificial intelligence. When Cooke and Ehrenreich bonded over their shared health anxieties, Mirren quickly set herself apart, identifying with the opposite mindset. 

She confessed to living in total denial regarding physical ailments, opting to completely ignore symptoms rather than seek professional medical care.

“Totally deny. I avoid doctors. Oh no, totally. And it’s working,” she said, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Ehrenreich joked that his constant worry over potential illnesses leaves him wishing he could keep a personal physician on call in his home. Mirren immediately countered his idea by pointing to digital tools as a modern substitute, encouraging him to lean on software instead.

“You know, AI is amazing. ‘It hurts, but it doesn’t hurt that much!’ Oh, it’s incredible,” she further added.

The Actress Previously Expressed Disdain For AI

In stark contrast to her current stance, Mirren famously made her disdain for artificial intelligence clear at the 37th American Cinematheque Awards in February 2024. 

While accepting her Lifetime Achievement Award from former co-star Harrison Ford at the Beverly Hilton, the Oscar-winning actress began reading what initially sounded like a traditional, eloquent acceptance speech. Expressing how “deeply humbled” and “profoundly honored” she was, she praised the industry and celebrated a lifetime dedicated to storytelling, as reported by Variety.

However, after delivering the poised opening, Mirren deadpanned to the audience and said, “And that was written by AI.” In the viral video shared on X, she then proceeded to tear the printed speech into pieces. Her actions were met with loud cheers and applause from the crowd.

Witherspoon previously faced sharp criticism after releasing video content urging women to actively embrace artificial intelligence in their daily workflows. The public pushback prompted rumors that her tech endorsement was a sponsored campaign. 

Taking to social media to set the record straight, Witherspoon clarified that her commentary stemmed strictly from personal interest rather than financial compensation, as reported by The Blast.

The actress addressed specific anxieties surrounding job security, environmental resources, and the rapid pace of machine intelligence. She then insisted she has no desire to see technology replace human creativity.

According to The Blast, the actress revealed that her legal representatives spent half a year drafting protective provisions to prevent machine learning tools from modifying or replicating her performance.

“It was six months for my lawyers to go through every scenario we could think about as far as the AI component of it,” she said. 

“We had to protect that, to such an extent that SAG called my lawyers to ask for pointers to update the SAG contract to protect other actors,” she added.

Although thousands of commenters backed Midler’s stance, actor and R&B vocalist Tyrese offered a starkly different outlook.
