Following the cancellation of his late-night show, Colbert enjoyed a triumphant return to the spotlight after he and his production team took home major honors at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards. 

The emotional victory prompted fans to share their support online, with many noting that he may have had the “last word” over the network that canceled his show.

During his acceptance speech, the host celebrated the hard work of his 200-plus staff members, using his time at the podium to pitch his former crew to hiring managers across the entertainment industry.

“Thank you so much on behalf of the over 200 people who threw themselves at this show for 11 years to try to do the best show they possibly could for you,” he said, as reported by People Magazine.

The TV personality noted that putting together such late shows requires a lot of work. He praised his team for putting in their best to make the show possible, and concluded by thanking the guests, his wife, and the audience for watching.

Building on the emotional momentum of the final award win, social media platforms immediately exploded with reactions celebrating the late-night icon’s victory over corporate and political pressure.

Viewers flooded digital platforms to frame the prestigious win as a symbolic triumph over corporate leadership at CBS and political hostility from Donald Trump.

“A perfect signing off for The Late Show. Trump and his cronies might have gotten him canceled, but Colbert got the last laugh, as he took home an Emmy: just another award that Trump will never receive. Suck on that, MAGA,” one fan wrote.

The Former Late-Night Host Was Happy To Reunite With His Former Staff On Emmy Night

Before taking the stage to accept his award, Colbert made a memorable appearance on the red carpet, sporting a gray goatee.

During the red carpet interview, the 62-year-old comedian emotionally reflected on reuniting with his former production crew.

Colbert explained that his primary motivation for attending the ceremony was to support his former colleagues, who had already secured six technical awards at the Creative Arts Emmys the previous weekend.

“I’m here to celebrate all my staff! They won six Emmys last weekend at the Creative Arts. My writers, my digital team, cameraman, director, lighting, technical direction. It was just – I’m so proud of them,” he gushed to People Magazine.

Setting the stage for their Primetime Emmy night victory, Colbert’s late-night franchise first dominated the Creative Arts Emmy Awards earlier in September.

The program capped off its 11-year run on CBS by securing multiple honors across major creative and technical categories. According to The Blast, the show picked up trophies for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series.

The series also swept technical categories, picking up wins for Outstanding Picture Editing for Variety Programming, Outstanding Lighting Design, and Outstanding Technical Direction and Camerawork. Adding to the streak, the franchise’s digital companion series, “Colbert Before Air,” claimed the Emmy for Outstanding Short Form Comedy, Drama or Variety Series.

The Emmy sweep provided a celebratory conclusion to the host’s run, but a mischievous stunt from the show’s May 21 finale ultimately left CBS with a huge legal bill.

During his final broadcast, Colbert delivered a playful jab at CBS by highlighting strict copyright enforcement surrounding the “Peanuts” television music catalog. 

“Peanuts is a powerful brand and corporation in and of itself. Anyone illegally using that music is going to have to pay through the nose,” he joked, per The Blast.

Although it was presented as a joke, Lee Mendelson Film Productions, Inc. subsequently confirmed a formal licensing agreement with CBS to resolve the unauthorized performance.
