Robert De Niro made a rare appearance on the September 15 episode of Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast, where he had to be schooled on what the term “thirst trap” means.

Poehler also moved him to tears as she commended him for using his platform to speak out about the issues he cares about.

The Taxi Driver actor has remained an outspoken critic of Donald Trump and recently called on Americans to mobilize against him in the upcoming midterm elections.

Robert De Niro Learns What a “Thirst Trap” Is

Robert De Niro may have multiple Academy Awards under his belt and a cultural impact few actors could dream of. Still, he recently showed that he is completely out of the loop when it comes to Gen Z internet slang.

The Goodfellas actor sat down for a rare, wide-ranging interview with Amy Poehler on her “Good Hang” podcast, where he discussed subjects including his introversion, childhood, and family life.

However, the conversation took an unexpectedly hilarious turn when she informed him that he had become an inadvertent heartthrob on social media platforms like TikTok.

Apparently, younger people frequently edit and share tribute videos featuring throwback footage from his earlier acting days.

Such content is generally considered a “thirst trap,” a term used to describe an attractive photo or video posted on social media to garner attention or sexual interest. However, De Niro had no clue what it meant and needed Poehler to explain it.

Elsewhere during their conversation, De Niro became emotional while discussing his activism with the host.

The heartwarming moment came near the end of the episode when the comedian heaped praise on him for unapologetically speaking out about the causes he believes in. She added that his stance was even more significant because of his age, stature, and influence.

“It’s often people of color. It’s often women. And to see a person like yourself, the age that you are and the status that you are, the best way I can describe it is when someone’s giving a terrible speech at a wedding, and they’re ruining the wedding,” Poehler said.

She continued, “And the wedding is America, and there’s another adult who says, ‘We don’t talk like that. That’s not how you’re supposed to treat people. This is insane.’ It makes everybody feel very safe. I’ve seen you do it over and over again and I really appreciate it.”

Poehler went on to tell De Niro that his willingness to speak up “means a lot to a lot of people” because he is mainly standing up for those who have neither the voice nor the power to do so.

“So, thank you, Bob. And thanks for doing it over and over again,” she said.

Her heartfelt words moved the Heat actor to tears, and when Poehler realized he was really crying, she said she was shocked.

“This is going to be a real switcheroo because I can’t believe I just made you cry,” she said. “I feel incredible right now. Hold on. We got to get you your tissues.”

When Poehler asked him to share a message for those who feel hopeless, he said, “I understand that, but you have to fight. You have to fight because if you don’t fight, you’re not going to get anything.”

Over the years, De Niro has repeatedly spoken out against Donald Trump’s administration, among other issues he strongly opposes.

In February, he headlined a counterprogram to the State of the Union address, urging Americans to oppose Trump in the November midterm elections.

“I feel betrayed by my country,” he said during State of the Swamp, per USA Today. “It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it does need to return to the values that gave us our strength and humanity.”

According to the outlet, he added that mobilization was crucial to holding leaders accountable.

“If you’re devoted to the Constitution and the rule of law, if you want the United States of America to be worthy of your love, be ready to take the streets together, and we will take our country back,” he added.

Meanwhile, De Niro recently got candid about the challenges of raising a large family. The “Cape Fear” actor is a father of seven, including 3-year-old daughter Gia, whom he shares with girlfriend Tiffany Chen.

In an August interview with PEOPLE, he admitted that balancing his parenting responsibilities is the hardest part and that he is not sure there is a “secret” to it.

“I don’t know if there is a secret,” he told the outlet. “It’s just managing it all. And there’s no way around not feeling a little guilty about not being there at times you should or you think you should.”

He added that parenting experience comes from learning on the job, and that no one may ever be fully prepared.

“It’s a new experience. It’s not like you’ve taken courses on it and stuff,” he said. “You can, of course, but you don’t. You just jump in, and you have the child, and you’ve got to… That’s it.”
