Drew Starkey Calls Himself a ‘Free Agent’ As ‘Outer Banks’ Comes To An End

Starkey has several projects releasing in the coming months, including A24’s “Onslaught,” which arrives in September, and Apple TV’s “Lucky,” which is currently airing. However, due to the final season of “Outer Banks” having been filmed already, the “Queer” star is looking forward to a bit of a break, his first since joining the first season of the show.
When speaking to GQ in August 2026, he revealed how he felt about not having acting commitments for a while. According to Starkey, it makes him feel like “a free agent.” The 32-year-old added, “LeBron James. I have no f-cking clue, and I think that’s what’s exciting about it is I really don’t have any idea what it’s going to look like. It’s pretty scary. It’s pretty terrifying.”
The actor also summed up his time on “Outer Banks,” saying, “I’ve loved, loved, loved my experience on that show.”
Drew Also Detailed His Last Day On Set

Production on the fifth and final season of “Outer Banks” began in June 2025 in Charleston, South Carolina. Some of the cast and crew, including Starkey, then moved to Croatia in October before filming for the season concluded in December.
In his GQ interview, Starkey opened up about his final day on set, recalling that he became quite emotional as he said goodbye. According to him, “I was a wreck on my last day. I was crying so much. I felt guilty, because I was feeling nothing leading up to it. I was like, ‘I’m glad it’s over.’ And then all of a sudden, after my last scene, they yelled, ‘Cut,‘ and I was just like, waterworks, weeping. I think I cried the most out of anyone.”
The ‘Lucky’ Star Also Reacted To ‘American Psycho’ Rumors

Elsewhere in the interview, Starkey was asked about the types of roles he’d like to take on in the future and how stepping into new movies makes him feel. According to him, “I finished this last film, and there’s that feeling of never wanting to step foot on a movie set again.”
He continued, “It takes so much out of me. I have to really invest every part of myself into it. And so by the end, I feel like a shell of a human being. I feel so exhausted. It’s some weird accepted form of schizophrenia or something.”
Starkey went on to explain, saying, “You’re pretending to be someone for two months that isn’t you, and then by the end of it—through some process of osmosis or something, I don’t know—you just hold on to emotions and feelings that aren’t yours.”
After that, he was asked about “American Psycho,” which Guadagnino has been tapped to direct and he’s been heavily rumored to star in as Patrick Bateman. Regarding whether he would be teaming up with the director following their work on 2024’s “Queer,” which he costarred in with Daniel Craig, he stated, “No comment.”
However, he went on to state that he’s read the script because he and Giadagnino were friends. Starkey added, “I think I’ve read all of his scripts.”
