Jane Fonda has opened up about her longing to return to the screen, admitting she misses it and revealing she’s working on a new project.

She made the candid remark at the 17th annual DVF Awards on Thursday night, where she drew attention for slamming “tech bros” and oligarchs obsessed with artificial intelligence and physical immortality.

What didn’t sit right with her in particular is how “they want to live forever” but are “killing others” and making robots their babies, rallying attendees to vehemently push back.

Jane Fonda Teases New Film Project After Five Years Away

After a successful Hollywood career spanning more than six decades, Jane Fonda has said she misses Hollywood. She made the candid remark at the 17th annual DVF Awards during the Venice Film Festival on Thursday night, where she also caught attention for several bold statements.

The Oscar winner, who has toned down her screen career to focus on her activism, also teased that she’s currently working on a film project and could make a return to acting soon.

“After five years of not working as an actor, I have to confess, much as I love the work that I do with my comrades in the movement, I miss the process of becoming somebody else,” she said, per The Hollywood Reporter. “It is such a thrilling process. I love it. I miss it.”

The “9 to 5” actress revealed that she’s developing an adaptation of the bestselling novel The Correspondent by Virginia Evans.

“I’m doing it for Lionsgate with the film company called Hidden Pictures. We have a good first draft, and we’re looking for a director,” she teased.

Jane Fonda Once Quit Acting For 15 Years After Marrying Ted Turner

This isn’t Fonda’s first stint in Hollywood retirement. After marrying her now-ex-husband Ted Turner in 1991, she announced her retirement but returned more than a decade later.

In a previous interview with Entertainment Tonight, the Klute actress explained that she didn’t think she’d come back from retirement because she thought her marriage to Turner would last forever.

“I left for 15 years, when I married Ted Turner, and I did not think I was gonna come back, ’cause when I married him, I thought it’d be forever,” she said at the time.

However, in an interview with Vogue last year, she explained that her marriage to Turner alone wasn’t the reason she pulled the plug, but because she “wasn’t having fun anymore.”

“I quit the business not just because I married Ted but because I wasn’t having fun anymore,” she told the news outlet. “I thought I was never gonna act again because I really didn’t miss it.”

Fonda Slammed ‘Tech Bros’ For Wanting To Live Forever

Elsewhere in her appearance at the DVF Awards ceremony, Fonda slammed Silicon Valley’s elite and corporate oligarchs who would seemingly stop at nothing in trying to ensure they live forever.

The 88-year-old activist addressed pressing socio-political concerns, taking direct aim at “tech bros, oligarchs and billionaires” who she argues do not want to live by the same rules guiding every other person.

“They want to live forever, while they’re killing the rest of us,” she said. “There are two things: Most of these guys, these tech bros and these oligarchs and billionaires, they feel that the laws that the rest of us live by don’t matter to them, including the laws of physics. Natural laws. They’re going to live forever.”

The Barbarella actress then warned about the societal impacts of unchecked artificial intelligence and extreme wealth concentration, claiming that tech leaders are pursuing uncanny technological replacements for human connections.

“The other [thing] is that because these guys can’t have babies, they’ll create robots,” she said. “That’ll be their babies, and they’ll just turn the rest of us into tradwives, who have a lot of babies too. Then they’ll take away the vote. Can you believe it? And we’re not going to stand for it.”

Fonda was part of an elite group of women who were honored at the event, which spotlights “extraordinary women” and changemakers committed to making the world a better place.

The list of honorees also included the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Amor Mottley; Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Lynsey Addario; Food4Education founder and CEO Wawira Njiru; and author Gisèle Pelicot.

Jane Fonda Slams Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery Merger

She went further to touch on some controversial topics, including the proposed merger between Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. Discovery.

The Grace and Frankie alum slammed the proposed deal, highlighting how it’s detrimental to the continuity of many workers in the entertainment industry.

“They’re carrying so much debt. The Ellisons are carrying so much debt, and it’s being postponed now, so that they have to pay these huge sums,” she said.

“The merger would be terrible for consumers,” Fonda continued. “Prices would go up. Thousands and thousands of people would lose their jobs, and as creatives, the fewer studios there are, the fewer places we can take our products. We lose bargaining power. Unions lose their power.”
