Kate Gosselin is reportedly bracing for the release of her estranged son Collin Gosselin’s memoir, which promises to explore the alleged trauma he experienced while growing up in front of reality television cameras. “In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood” is scheduled to arrive on October 13, and an insider claims Kate is concerned about what her 22-year-old son plans to reveal.
Kate Gosselin Is Reportedly Dreading The Memoir
The book is expected to revisit Collin’s childhood, his institutionalization and his fractured relationships with several members of the Gosselin family. Kate has not publicly addressed the source’s latest claims about her reported reaction. “There is no doubt Kate is nervous this book is about to hit,” a source told Page Six.
The insider claimed the former “Jon & Kate Plus 8” star does not want her children publicly discussing their family history. “Kate doesn’t want anyone in the family to talk about their past. She considers any of the children who talk in the family as traitors,” the source alleged.
Earlier this month, Collin told Page Six that he is “not the one that should be nervous” about the book’s release. The source supported Collin’s position, saying, “Collin couldn’t be more spot on when he says he isn’t the one who should be nervous about the book coming out.”
Collin has promoted the memoir as his opportunity to tell his version of events after years of family conflict and public speculation. The book’s description points toward a deeply personal account of growing up under the pressure of fame.
Collin Plans To Address His Childhood And Institutionalization
Collin has been estranged from his mother since 2016, when Kate sent him to a behavioral health institution at age 11. Kate reportedly maintained that her son had exhibited violent and unpredictable behavior. Collin has disputed that characterization and claimed he possessed medical records that supported a different account.
He has alleged that his mother abused him and had him institutionalized because he did not want to continue participating in the family’s TLC reality shows. Those allegations represent Collin’s account of his childhood.
Collin remained at the facility until his father, Jon Gosselin, located him and secured his release. Jon was eventually granted legal and physical custody of his son.
Jon and Kate divorced in 2009, after which Kate initially retained custody of all eight children. Jon also gained custody of Collin’s sextuplet sister Hannah after she left Kate’s home. Their siblings Joel, Alexis, Leah, and Aaden remained with Kate, along with older twin sisters Mady and Cara.
The other six children have remained estranged from Jon, while Collin’s relationship with Kate and several of his siblings has also remained fractured.

Collin’s memoir is expected to take readers behind the carefully produced version of family life shown on television. He reportedly plans to discuss growing up in the “dark” spotlight and the “trauma” he says occurred when cameras were not rolling.
The Page Six source claimed the book may also address subjects Kate allegedly discouraged her children from discussing publicly. “She originally told the kids they could never talk about Steve [Neild], the man they all lived with growing up after Jon left,” the insider alleged.
Neild previously worked as Kate’s bodyguard. Page Six reported in September 2025 that the two had become romantically involved after years of speculation about their relationship. “When Kate realized the information that she was still living with Steve was going to be revealed in the book, she wanted control and finally released the secret she’s been keeping for years,” the source claimed.
The insider then offered a harsh prediction about how the book could affect the public’s perception of Kate. “This book is going to reveal the truth, and people will finally see the real Kate Gosselin, and it’s not pretty.”
Writing The Memoir Was ‘Insanely Healing’ For Collin
Collin, who graduated with honors while living under his father’s care, said putting his experiences into words became an important part of his healing process.
“Writing this was like therapy for me,” he told Page Six. “It was insanely healing. Just to be able to look at a picture of myself and be like, that’s who I’m doing it for and then think about all the millions of children who go through what I went through, being thrown into the industry against their will. That’s what you can expect in this.”
Collin suggested the memoir is intended to extend beyond his individual conflict with Kate. He wants his experiences to contribute to a broader discussion about children who become reality stars before they are old enough to understand or consent to that exposure.
“There’s a big voice in my story that will never die,” Collin continued. “This book is going to expose a lot, and there’s going to be a big message coming from it, and I hope you’re ready.”
His statements make clear that the book will not simply revisit television memories. Collin intends to directly confront the experiences he believes shaped his childhood and later estrangement from his family.
Collin Gosselin Is Returning To Reality Television
Ahead of the memoir’s publication, Collin is stepping back into reality television as a contestant on Season 5 of Fox’s “Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test.” The cast includes Brandi Glanville, Breana Tiesi, Candace Cameron Bure, Ruby Rose, George Santos, Matt Barnes, Alycia Baumgardner, David Charvet, Oliver Hudson, LeSean McCoy, Maxim Naumov and Hannah Stocking.
“Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” personalities Alexia and Mauricio Umansky are also joining the season as a father-daughter team. The contestants will be deployed to Malaysia and placed through challenges modeled after the Special Forces selection process. Fox described the jungle setting as “the world’s toughest test in the most hostile environment a soldier could operate in … the jungle.”
The season premieres September 24 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Fox, giving Collin a new public platform weeks before his memoir arrives.
