Actor Nick Cannon is known for many things, including “Wild ‘N Out,” “Drumline,” his 12 kids, and his eight-year marriage with one of the world’s most famous singers, Mariah Carey. The pair were together from 2008 until they divorced in November 2016. Although Cannon has been in public relationships since then, the comedian opened up about his love life in a recent interview and implied he was against remarrying.

“I don’t like the government in my love life,” Cannon said in a new interview about possibly getting remarried. “I think the institution of marriage should be respected, but I can’t see myself going through the legal paperwork again.”

Of course, this isn’t the first time that Cannon has spoken about remarrying after his divorce from Carey. During an appearance on the “It’s Tricky with Raquel Harper” podcast, the actor made a similar statement.

“It depends on what you call marriage. Getting the government involved, nah. We can go have a ceremony somewhere,” he said. “Why would government be involved in your love life? That seems so bizarre to me. It’s really a business and to bring business and love together, that’s a tough one to get involved with.”

Although Cannon and Carey’s marriage ended, the 45-year-old had only positive things to say about the “Obsessed” singer in 2022, calling their marriage “one of the greatest experiences of my life.”

At the time, Cannon called Carey one of his “best friends” and boasted about what a great woman she is. He also admitted that he was probably still hurt from their split.

“Divorce is a sense of, ‘You failed,’ and when you have that level of failure with everyone seeing it, it was a lot on me for a long time,” he said. “I didn’t really know how to process it. I had to go find myself. I had to go within.”

Nick Cannon Previously Said He Struggled Being ‘Mariah’s Man’

The details about what caused Carey and Cannon’s divorce have remained private, but the latter showed vulnerability during a 2024 interview, in which he suggested his insecurities played a role in their separation.

“She’s got islands and I’m waking up at noon and people bringing me steaks on a platter,” he said, adding that it would cause him to stay up at night thinking about his purpose.

“I would lay up at night thinking, like, ‘Is is this who I am? Am I Mariah’s man? Is that what my life is supposed to be?'” he added before clarifying that there was “nothing wrong with it.”

But playing second to Carey wasn’t for Cannon, he said. “I believe she needs a dude like that. I’m just not that dude.”

Where Do Cannon And Carey Stand Today?

Despite his feelings about marriage, Cannon recently said he’ll always have a soft spot for Carey, and even revealed that they talk “almost every day or every other day.”

“We were laughing about [reports we’re not close]. I was like, ‘Who is telling people that?’ On the flip side, I’ve heard we’re getting back together. I’ll deliver the truth with the doc. I’m always open [to that]. Our divorce wasn’t messy. We were able to move on and be the best parents we can,” he said.

And that’s not all he had to say about Carey. Elsewhere in the interview, the “Masked Singer” host praised Carey’s influence in his life, calling her “my greatest friend and my greatest teacher.” He went on to say that Carey inspired him to live in the moment and surround yourself with what brings you peace and joy.

“I think that’s what keeps her going — her faith and her ability to block out negative energy. You feel like you know her, but she keeps all the things that are meaningful to her to herself,” he continued.

While Carey hasn’t discussed her relationship with Cannon lately, it would seem like she’s in a good space with him, considering her reaction to learning he insured his private parts for $10 million.

When Andy Cohen asked her about the news on an episode of “Watch What Happens Live,” she not only rolled her eyes and smirked, but also called on a higher power to help her process the information.

“Lord, help me,” she said, according to The Blast.
