Machine Gun Kelly and Dakota Johnson‘s reported New York City night together is starting to look a little less mysterious.

Days after the two sparked romance speculation by spending time at Taylor Swift’s Tribeca apartment, a source has opened up about what was really happening between them.

And while MGK, whose real name is Colson Baker, apparently isn’t ready to call the connection anything serious, the insider claims one thing is already clear: he is “really into” Johnson.

According to Page Six, MGK came away from his time with Johnson very impressed.

“Colson had a really nice time with Dakota. He thinks she’s really cool and obviously he’s attracted to her,” a source told the outlet. “They hit it off and there was definitely chemistry.”

The insider stressed that whatever is developing between the two is still in its earliest stages.

“It’s new and they’re just getting to know each other, but there was definitely something there, and he would like to see her again,” the source explained.

MGK was described as “really into” Johnson, with the insider saying the two appeared comfortable around each other.

Part of the attraction reportedly comes down to Johnson’s personality.

“He likes that she’s funny and doesn’t take herself too seriously,” the source continued. “It wasn’t awkward or forced. They were vibing and had fun.”

Still, the evening apparently wasn’t designed as some elaborate romantic date.

“It wasn’t some big planned-out romantic night, or anything like that,” the insider said. “They were hanging out, having dinner, talking and getting to know each other.”

And despite the apparent chemistry, MGK isn’t rushing to define their connection.

“He’s not putting a label on anything or getting ahead of himself,” the source explained. “He likes her, they had fun and he’d like to hang out with her again. That’s really where it is right now.”

Dakota Johnson And MGK Wanted Their Night Away From Prying Eyes

Privacy appears to have been an important part of the evening. As The Blast previously reported, Johnson and MGK were spotted spending time at Taylor Swift’s Tribeca property, immediately igniting questions about why the unlikely pair had ended up there together.

Page Six‘s source now claims the answer was relatively simple.

“Taylor has let friends use her NYC properties before, and Dakota and Colson wanted privacy, so they headed to her apartment,” the insider said.

Swift was reportedly not home at the time. Johnson and MGK were later spotted heading to Estela for dinner.

The source said the musician “wasn’t trying to make a big thing out of it or have everyone know they were together.”

That effort ultimately proved unsuccessful once their movements became public.

Taylor Swift Has Separate Connections To Both Stars

Swift’s apartment may seem like an unexpected setting for Dakota Johnson and MGK’s budding connection, but there are existing links between all three stars.

Johnson and Swift have quietly been friends for years. Earlier this year, the pop diva offered an unusually personal glimpse into their relationship when Johnson was named to TIME’s 100 Most Influential People of 2026.

As The Blast reported at the time, Swift praised Johnson’s famous candor and said she could personally “vouch for her realness.”

The singer also called Johnson “one of the most empathetic people I’ve ever known.”

There is another intriguing connection. Both Johnson and MGK attended Swift and Travis Kelce’s star-studded July wedding at Madison Square Garden, and Page Six reported that the pair crossed paths there.

They had also moved in the same celebrity circles before that, with both attending Vogue World: Hollywood at Paramount Studios in October 2025.

Their latest New York outing, therefore, wasn’t necessarily a meeting between two complete strangers. Instead, it appears to be a new connection developing between two people whose social worlds had already overlapped.

The timing is particularly interesting for Johnson, who recently emerged from another romance she largely kept out of the spotlight.

The 36-year-old actress had been linked to singer Role Model, whose real name is Tucker Pillsbury, after they were first spotted together in December 2025.

In April, an insider told PEOPLE their relationship was “definitely more than a fling, or just a flirt” and said Johnson was taking things slowly following the end of her long relationship with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin.

Johnson and Role Model even collaborated creatively, with the actress contributing a spoken-word moment to his song “Love I You.”

However, PEOPLE reported in August that Johnson and Pillsbury had quietly ended things “a while ago.”

Before that relationship, Johnson spent nearly eight years with Martin.

The actress and Coldplay singer dated on and off from 2017 until their final split in June 2025 and were reportedly engaged for years.

That history could help explain why Johnson has continued to keep her newer romantic life relatively private.

MGK Is Also Navigating Life After His Megan Fox Romance

MGK arrives at the possible new chapter with his own complicated romantic history.

His years-long relationship with Megan Fox included an engagement, multiple breakups and reconciliations, and eventually the birth of their daughter, Saga Blade, in March 2025.

By January 2026, however, sources said their romantic relationship was over and that their connection had shifted toward raising their daughter.

The Blast reported in April that their co-parenting relationship had encountered renewed difficulties, with sources claiming disagreements had resurfaced between the former couple.

MGK is also father to daughter Casie, whom he shares with ex Emma Cannon.
