Music legend and beloved “American Idol” judge Lionel Richie has been hospitalized again after suffering a heart issue. Notably, this follows the 77-year-old spending three days in the ICU near the end of August. Sadly, this also means that the “Hello” singer has been forced to cancel multiple upcoming tour dates.

Lionel Richie Is Said To Be Receiving Treatment For A Heart Condition

According to TMZ, the “All Night Long (All Night)” singer has checked himself into the hospital again due to a heart condition. Per the outlet, Richie is receiving treatment for atrial fibrillation, which means the singer may have recently experienced an irregular heartbeat.

Regarding his treatment, the medical professionals at the hospital are using AFib ablation, which is considered a minor procedure and is minimally invasive. Essentially, this procedure creates small scars in the heart to create a barrier to faulty electrical signals. AFib ablation also helps restore the heart’s normal rhythm.

The ‘American Idol’ Judge Previously Checked Himself Into The Hospital

Richie performed at The Muny in St. Louis on August 29, with the crooner needing the assistance of a chair near the end of the show and complaining of dehydration. After the performance, he checked himself into a hospital out of caution and stayed for three days.

According to TMZ, much of that time was spent in the ICU, where doctors conducted various cardiac tests. Several days later, he was spotted at a dinner party at Mr. Chow in Beverly Hills. He appeared in good spirits in the photos, even flashing a double thumbs-up at one point.

Three Concerts Have Been Canceled Following Lionel Richie’s Hospitalization 

Though Richie is expected to undergo only a minor procedure, it’s unclear how long he’ll need to recover. As a result, three dates of his “Sing All Night Long Tour,” which he’s co-headlining with Earth, Wind & Fire, have been canceled.  

The first of the three was scheduled for September 26 in San Francisco, California. The shows for September 30 in Chicago and October 2 in Columbus, Ohio, have also been canceled. Per Richie’s official website, the next concert date will be October 14 in Las Vegas.  

Currently, he has concerts booked through January 2027.

Lionel Was Also Hospitalized In June

Richie performed in St. Paul, Minnesota, on June 24. However, during the show, he began to feel dizzy and performed from a chair for portions of the concert. Unfortunately, Richie had to end his performance early and was taken to a nearby hospital.

The tour’s promoter, Live Nation, then released a statement, confirming that two concert dates had been canceled. They said, “Under advisement by doctors to rest and return to full health, Lionel Richie has postponed his next two shows on Friday, June 26 in Chicago, IL, and Saturday, June 27 in Columbus, OH. He and Earth, Wind & Fire will return to the stage on Tuesday, June 30 in Pittsburgh, PA.”

The statement continued, “Lionel is heartbroken to postpone these two shows and cannot wait to be back performing for his fans. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes fans who have tickets for these two shows. Rescheduled dates will be announced soon.”

Days later, on July, 4, Richie gave an update on Instagram. He wrote, “Thank you for every message, every kind word, and for all your love. I’m doing well, and I’m grateful for all of you.”
 
He continued, “Pittsburgh and Detroit were an absolute joy. The energy, the dancing, the faces in the crowd… we made real memories together. See you in Toronto… let’s party all night long!”

He Is Expected To Return To ‘American Idol’ For Season 25

Richie joined “American Idol” as a judge in 2017, with the show’s 16th season then premiering the following year in March. He initially judged the show alongside Katy Perry and Luke Bryan. However, Perry has since left, and Carrie Underwood has replaced her.

As of writing, ABC has not announced the judging panel for “American Idol” season 25, but all three are expected to return.
