Sara Haines became emotional while revealing the heartbreaking family loss that forced her to miss an episode of “The View.” The daytime television host explained that her father-in-law had died after spending a week in hospice care. Haines learned of his death shortly before Wednesday’s live broadcast and decided to step away from the show to support her husband, Max Shifrin. Haines returned to “The View” on Thursday and immediately addressed why she had been missing from the previous day’s episode. “I wanted to share why I was missing yesterday,” Haines said, according to Entertainment Weekly. “My father-in-law passed away. He [had] been in hospice for a week, so we knew it was coming.”

Although the family had time to prepare for the possibility of his death, Haines said the reality of the loss still brought an overwhelming emotional release. “I think the second that landed, it kind of allowed a load [we were] carrying [to] gush out,” she added.

Haines said she “found out right before the show [Wednesday],” prompting her decision to sit out the broadcast.

Haines has been married to Shifrin since 2014. The couple shares three children, sons Alec, 10, and Caleb, 7, and daughter Sandra, 8. The television personality explained that Shifrin had been away from his children while coping with his father’s declining health. “Max has been gone. He hasn’t seen the kids, and now he’s finally back, and we’re pouring love into him,” Haines said.

She also reflected on the powerful relationship her husband shared with his father. “[He] was the most important person in Max’s life,” she said of her father-in-law. “I think I learned about this man on my first date because [he] was Max’s North Star, so it’s the chapter we’re in, and we’ll all be part of this club eventually. But wow, it’s brutal.”

Sara Haines Wanted To Stop Rumors About Her Absence

Haines said she decided to speak publicly because she wanted to “quell any rumors going around” following Wednesday’s broadcast.

Speculation began after Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar had an awkward exchange while discussing why Haines was not at the “Hot Topics” table. Goldberg indicated that Haines might return the following day, but Behar quickly clarified that their co-host was not sick. Haines did not share additional information about funeral arrangements or how long her father-in-law had been ill.

Sara Haines Previously Left ‘The View’ Before Returning

Haines originally joined “The View” as a permanent co-host in 2016 after working on programs including “Today” and “Good Morning America.” She departed the daytime talk show in 2018 to co-host “GMA Day,” which was later renamed “Strahan, Sara and Keke.”
